Hi,

I am just reading the rules of Tannhäuser and will play my first game with the revised rules at the weekend.

But, I am a bit confused of the many game modes. Which mode would you suggest for a beginner? Which mode is the most fun? I tried Tannhäuser with the classic rules a while back, and sold it after that. I try to avoid this experience ;-)

And are there scenarios for just the base game? If I get it right, all scenarios in the revised rules are for use with expansions...

Thanks!

Use "deathmatch" to begin with... that's the best way to learn the game.

For "fun" - I really enjoy the scenarios... but don't start there. (And there's at least one scenario - Reich vs Union on the Catacomb map - included in the new book.)

Ok - the rules seem to suggest "King of the hill" for the first game. Why would you not recommend that?

Btw: I know the game, as I already played the old version. At least it is not completely new to me.

Hmmm... I thought the rules suggested "deathmatch." I'll check later today.

Familiarity w/the old rules will help - though I think they MAJORLY fixed the VP/Command Point problem with the new set.

Just checked - it's deathmatch. (Page 28 shows the other modes.)

And there's a GREAT series of posts entitled Tannhauser for Beginners on Miah's blog:

You are right, the rules suggest deathmatch. But, to be honest, I don't like the deathmatch mode of most skrimish boardgames - so I am still wondering what I should play...

I also checked the rules for the scenarios - there really isn't one that can be played without at least additional characters. Of course, you may find workaround for that problem, but still - not really satisfying.

For the first playing sessions, follow the revised rulebook suggestion: Deathmatch

You will get a good experience with the rules, and anyway, the playtime is 1 hour more or less.

Play one or two times the deathmatch and only then, try the other modes.
