I have two big problems with this game.

1. The last player to play a card has a big advantage. He gets the "last word" on one animal, he gets to select the best animal available, and might get more total animals than some players.

2. Going first (or early) has an advantage in that you might end up with more animals than later players.

The rules handle this by saying you play until each player has gone first one time, but our group treats Botswana (or Loco) as a filler and would never seriously sit down for a full game keeping score.

So last time we tried a three player game with simultaneous play. It worked like this:

1. The "it" player chooses an animal. All the other players take turns choosing an animal.

2. Everybody selects a card.

3. Starting with the "it" player everybody reveals and plays their card.

4. If the game does not end, the "it" player passes.

We decided we liked the variant well enough, and I will suggest it in the future.

I reject your premise. I don't know about Botswana, but Loco! just takes a minute to set up and get playing, and each hand is so quick that we naturally play one hand a player. Total play time is well under 30 minutes.

That said, a simultaneous card play / equal chip variant is intriguing. Seems like it could be fun. Thanks for sharing.

I agree. Simultaneous selection would make things more interesting.
