well you all are kind as always. when you are down inside the design you don't see the big picture as much.

but you BGGers keep me going!

I love the fact that you did away with the half-planets and put all the details of each system on the card itself. Much less referencing the rulebook, and looks awesome too.

5x7" you say? Nice. Can just take it to the local 1-hour photo and get it printed on matte or semi-gloss photo and (optionally) stick it to something more rigid. Will be the easiest PnP project to build ever.

Re: Aether Captains - Current Projects
say tim, that is a great idea!

maybe the design challenge for this game will be to do all components in 5x7 arrangements.

and yes the half planets were a great idea originally i think.

i wanted to take it into a more SF direction by designing 15 different planets in photoshop so that you really get the feel of the degoba run in 15 parsecs so to speak

The half-planets are definitely great if you've played the game a bunch of times and are ready for some variety. But when you're starting out, your way will be much more approachable.

Re: Aether Captains - Current Projects
ok one last image for tonight of everything in progress (just started a very very rough layout for the icon index) (and i know this is a long image but it's my forum thread )

added in some little details like the NAVCOM AI - Antelope Class label and such. reconfigured the planet card and atlas map to a 5"x7" size. everything will eventually be done in a white background low ink version as well. eager to get started on some planet designing

Re: Aether Captains - Current Projects
curse you inadequate home printer! (good thing there's always andrew to do the work for me instead)

the only problem i see with the concept so far is, to me, a lot of those symbols are not intuitive at all. certain ones like the slum, ruins and rough terrain symbol don't really resonate, while others like colony, mining and wealth work great. i know this is just a concept, but i figured i'd get my 2 cents in before you went about setting anything in stone.

Re: Aether Captains - Current Projects
Yeah, and the craters and gambling are really hard to distinguish as well.

...

I agree with Kyle, some of them are a little bit hard to relate to. Space station looks like an LP, Spaceport looks like the signal on my phone, and the City looks like it's going down hill from last year. Rough Terrain, an outlet?

...

Yeah, I should go to bed now.

hahahahaha i'm dying here. you do realize, andrew, that there is no symbol for gambling or crater yet, right? or military or prison? i am having a very difficult time detecting any sarcasm in your post, because the rest of it is definitely serious, hahaha

It's like being back at uni!

Seriously though, all looking good.

As it's been mooted, I've used photo prints many times for P&P components, and the effects can be stunning.

Just to also note that in some places, 7.5x5 is apparently the photo standard, so it may be prudent to make these available with an extra half inch of bleed on the width to cope with international differences.

I would have said a speaker.

Like the general trend you're taking, Todd, but agree that some of these icons could be tweaked.

Is that a typewriter for industrial?

Re: Aether Captains - Current Projects
well after a couple of hours on the phone with adobe i finally got the new version of photoshop working, which means i can now make my own planets.

i still have to recolor some icons (the space port should be white and the slum yellow) but that can wait

toying with adding the reference icon in the lower left which matches the one in the star atlas

generally like this though. clean, readable and SF feeling.

i;ve been taking photos for days of textures i find to make the planets out of.

Re: Aether Captains - Current Projects
It's really looking nice! I like the new icons.

I got my CoB cards from Artscow today and they turned out great! I'll post some pics this weekend. I designed them so they can be cut down to 3" tall. Still half an inch taller then your originals but fit ok on the edge of your character sheets if you stack them a bit over eachother. Since they are alittle larger they are super easy to read with these old eyes!

EDIT- I uploaded the cards to the CoB file section so hopefully will be available in a couple days.

That red is kind of hard to see on the left side :\

Why not add a light color to the back of the icon to help bring it out from the planet. Or a square of black to help it pop?

Looks good so far. Star Smuggler is one of those games I've heard about but never got around to trying.

Gunslinger

i was browsing around and found this game, Gunslinger! there were also a lot of comments i found about a want for a redesign for this, and i thought i'd throw it out there as a possible future project for you. you know, get a western under your belt!

Re: Aether Captains - Current Projects
hmm gunslinger. interesting ... a martin wallace game. that would certainly be a big project.

for now 8 of 16 planet cards have had planets created (having some fun, Slartibartfast style). i've added a small color tone to the icon squares to help with readability and reinforce the color idea which is important for movement.

starting to look like a right nice planetary catalog

the asteroids were fun to do. glad i had images around from the Off World Colony game

Western is good, but science-fiction is better. Unless you were to retheme it as a space wester. Then we can talk

Re: Aether Captains - Current Projects
by the way i am still actively working to make all design components for this game be 7.5"x5" (with a clear area of 7"x5" for photo printing variations). i like the idea of everything being the same size.

current timeline for design components

finish planets
finish planet cards with full icon sets
finish all 6 star atlas maps
design character tracking cards (2 cards, 3 characters slots to a card)
design time line
design starship map
design any counters needed
