A few weeks back my father visited for a day and an evening. It was a good visit. At one point he was in my office looking at my overflowing game shelves with his jaw hanging open. It is rare that he visits and he has never seen the extend of my game collection. So I gave him a quick tour and explained the different types of games. I spent extra time explaining solo games and cooperative games.

Fast forward to present... I am going to visit my father this weekend... almost as rare as him visiting me. I just got a call on my cell from my dad.

"Can you bring that game you showed me? The cooperative one... about diseases?"

"Ahh you are referring to Pandemic... and yes... it is already packed and ready to go."

I had already thought of bringing pandemic because of his reaction when I explained it. He is into all things disease related and there was a slight uptick of his eyebrow - that was it... but I knew he was interested. I am very pleased to have a chance to game with my Dad. growing up we played a lot of games together - from Masterpiece and Sorry to Cribbage. Can't wait.

Nope - he is a chemical engineer - a Massachusetts based lawyer - a food and flavoring expert i.e. he headed research teams that developed Pringles, Folgers Crystals, flavoring for Chambourg and brand name Cigarettes, Jiff peanut butter, and Old Elpaso Salsa - helped develop stain resistant carpeting... and currently owns and operates a massage therapy practice. An eclectic and interesting guy. Pandemic was fun - first game we got wiped out but the 2nd game we won handily with my father heading up the strategic choices - I purposely kept quiet and let the others run the show. He enjoyed it and I know it has opened the door for more gaming.
