Played this for the first time today, with 5 of my kids, and had a blast.

We did have a question about sea movement thought. Can movement between friendly areas adjacent to a Sea Zone (like Mediterranean) be done without permission of the guy that has overall Sea control? We played that they could, but I'd like to hear what someone else thinks.

You can take my game… when you pry my cold, dead fingers off the board!

Are you playing the basic rules? I haven't played much, and then only Deluxe, but for basic rules this seems covered on pg. 7:
Quote:
Sea areas that are labeled as “Sea Zones” and have an anchor symbol, (Example: North Sea Zone) allow amphibious movement from any region adjacent to the sea zone to any other region that is also adjacent to the same sea zone. It is as if all the regions adjacent to the sea zone have sea lanes going to all of the other regions adjacent to the sea zone.

When you want to move any pieces amphibiously, you declare the move and place the pieces on the sea lane. After you are finished with your move, but before you fight any battles, the player who controls the seas (the one who has his naval cards in the middle of the board), tells you if he is allowing you to make the move. If he allows it, your pieces finish the move and arrive in their destination region. If he does not allow the move, then your pieces are returned to their starting region and cannot be moved again during this action. The exception to this rule is that plane units that are moving amphibiously cannot be blocked.

NOTE: If you are moving units amphibiously, and the move is blocked by the player who has control of the sea, you may decide whether you want to move your planes across anyway, or to move them back with the rest of your units.

So it looks like only planes can fly over without permission.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the reply! Yes, we played the basic game. I guess my confusion is based on the ocean in the middle of the board (where your cards are placed to indicate control of the seas) is separated from the "sea zones" by borders. One could interpret control of the sea as being only applicable to the sea lanes that stretch across the Atlantic.

But the more general interpretation makes sense too. At the beginning of the game I thought that control of the sea seemed too powerful. However, I was able to take control myself, and managed to lose anyway

Oh, the sea....
I thought the same, control the sea is a powerful thing (and annoying!!) I and my friends divided the sea. There is a northern and a southern part now (on the map you can see the lines). It is much better. One player controls the northern and another the southern part of the seas.
Meanwhile I am working on a "naval mod". I make little ships, to have big sea battles. In the expansion there are ships, I know, but I do not want to have the expansion, it would make the game too difficult. I know that I can order plastic ships from the game's website, but I am in Hungary, so I would have to pay twice the cost of the expansion! So I make ships, and will use the rules of the expansion (for the sea part, of course!)
