Friends,
It looks like this game has a page on the Rio Grande Games website: http://www.riograndegames.com/games.html?id=384. The site lists a May/June release date and has new artwork.
Thanks, Bob

Yes, indeed. I am actively working with Rio Grande on the new artwork and also putting the professional fit and finish on the rulebook. It's coming together quite nicely.

Kyle - I know the headquarters expansion is to be included in the Rio Grande version. Any news on the Deception expansion and whether or not this is still in the works?

Deception is still in the works, as are a whole host of other potential Contested Resources, Mercenaries, Tools, etc. I even have a Zombie expansion and a Mutant expansion of the game on paper. I will still need to do a fair bit of playtesting and surveying of game groups to see if there is interest in either of those expansions, but I do have the respective game arcs and mechanics drafted for them.

The game mechanics in HQ are pretty significant. The player-specific powers introduced by tribe leaders create some really interesting possibilities. Most, but not all, of the tribal leaders grant a power that requires you to 'use' your refugees in some manner (in the case of The Cannibal it requires that you 'eat' them, The Fanatic uses refugees as suicide bombers, etc.). Then the introduction of the Medic gives you a new way to spend food and an opportunity to purchase meds rather than just find them. Then the Engineer brings about this really game changing ability to construct buildings that offer you new ways to manage your deck and provides new decisions that you never had before. Combine all of this with the Gangs which introduce a new end-game scoring opportunity and some new rules that enable you to use Sniper Team and Saboteur in new ways and you have some dramatic changes to your decision-making process.
In the expansion rules, it actually recommends that you introduce these different elements in stages so that you can adapt accordingly. Plus, it gives player groups the opportunity to decide which elements of HQ they would like to factor into their game at any given time.
I know that many of you have been waiting a year and a half for the expansion. I sincerely apologize for the wait, but I assure you that you will not be disappointed with the new game play.

Wow - thanks for the updates Kyle. I'm even more excited for this to hit retail than I was before. Sounds like the Headquarters expansion(s) allow you to add or subtract components to your liking. In my opinion some of these added changes to the game mechanics will define Arctic Scavengers as a very distinct game amongst the growing number of deck building games. I already love the "skirmish" aspect of the original; giving you incentive to hold onto cards or simply bluff your opponents. I am very anxious to see first hand the added complexity of this newest version.

Yeah, Rio Grande is much more concerned with giving the artist and production team the time that they need to finish the work rather than hitting an arbitrary timeline. I am actively exchanging e-mails with the artist on a weekly basis. We have a finalized master card template and several sub templates for different categories (mercenaries, junk yard, CRs, buildings, tribal leaders, etc.). We also have several pieces of art complete for the mercenary cards and preliminary designs for over half the cards. It is coming along and the artwork is really captivating. Each card paints a scene rather than just displaying a static image.
There is NO official timeline. That's not how things operate at Rio Grande. That having been said, I would guess that everything would be ready to go to print sometime in June. So I still think we are talking about a summer release.

Same game play & mechanics. Same theme. Same rules (but re-written by a professional rules writer). New 2-player variant game mode. Better quality cards. Real box. New art. HQ Expansion.

Great news. But darn it! I just used a 20% frequent buyer coupon at my local game store only to find out we have Arctic Scavengers, a new Thunderstone, and a new Dominion all coming out in the next month or two.
Oh well, having too many deck builders is a good problem to have in my book!

What does the "+" icon stand for at the top right hand corner of the card? Wonder if this ties into the Headquarters expansion functionality.

I think it might be cost, 2 food and 2 med. However, the hunter image from the old games shows a cost of 1 med. Maybe some rebalancing has occurred as well.

Artwork looks ok, looks like they're aiming for a more language indepedant style which makes sense. I've wanted to try this for a long time, but started to think it was never going to happen.
2011 seems to be a big year for Card & Boadgames, this one should do OK with Rio Grande behind it as long as the price point is reasonable. I'll probably pick it up if it's around $25, but over $30 there's too many other options.

That's a med icon because the new design is icon-centric for language porting purposes. The cards that are posted are not reflecting the actual costs, they are just there to demonstrate the card design.

You are correct. Hunter cost has not changed. It is 0 food, 1 med.
