Some Players are wandering whether the Solo/1 Player game of AoD is winnable in Hard Level (uses only 4 Timer Cards, means you have only 5 Turns to win the game). Yes, I won many times on the Hard Level in the past, but what about percentage of winning? uh oh, I have never taken any data on that. So, why not? I play AoD solo ten times in a Row to see the statistics.

THE RULES
- I play the solo games 10 times straight on the Hard Level (of course, because each game takes around 15-20 minutes, sometimes I take rest after each game)
- I follow all the Rules and the solo Rules, including randomizing the Character on the Setup.
- no cheating (if I left Lake of Hope, then realize that I forget to CYCLE X in Lake of Hope, then unlucky me! No take back move, at all).
- As a warm up, I play AoD a few times before I start writing the result. But after that, win or lose, I will write my games statistics 10 times in a Row.
- Please note that I am the designer of AoD, and I have played AoD maybe around 200-250 times (1/2/3/4 Players) since designing it.

THE RESULTS
Game #1: WIN
THIEF (starting stat:STR), final stats: 5-0-0.
Game #2: WIN
KNIGHT (starting stat:INT), final stats: 3-5-2.
Note: this is the easiest out of 10, I learn two Skills (Song of Joy and Healing Hand) and get many Items on my way.
Game #3: WIN
WRESTLER (starting stat:AGL), final stats: 5-2-2.
Game #4: LOSE
WRESTLER (starting stat:AGL), final stats: 5-1-1.
Note: I continue the game after the time is up, and win the next day.
Game #5: LOSE
AMAZON (starting stat:AGL), final stats: 5-1-1.
Note: I try to take picture each Turn, but this results in distracting my focus, so I stop taking pictures. I continue the game after the time is up, and win the next day.
Game #6: DEAD on day 3 (2 Timer Cards left)
GLADIATOR (starting stat:AGL), final stats: 2-2-2.
Note: I try to take the risk, and fail.
Game #7: WIN
BARBARIAN (starting stat:STR), final stats: 2-5-2.
Game #8: LOSE
RANGER (starting stat:INT), final stats: 2-2-5.
I continue the game after the time is up, and win the next day.
Game #9: WIN
RANGER (starting stat:AGL), final stats: 2-2-5.
Game #10: WIN
BARBARIAN (starting stat:AGL), final stats: 0-5-0.
Note: among all of my wins, this is the hardest from the beginning. I decide to focus on pursuing AGL and ignore some STR/INT upgrades. With IMHO a good move, plus a lucky result from Master Baqem (yes, one of those AGL was from Master Baqem, upgrading my AGL from 3 to 4), I win the game! This is a nice ending!

Overall Notes:
If I win, it is always on the final day. In one or two games, I can try to win on day 4 (1 Timer Card left) but it will be too risky, so I choose a safer way to win on the last day.

SUMMARY FROM THOSE 10 GAMES
-In Hard Level (4 Timer Cards), I win 6 out of 10, means 60%.
-If I play the game in Normal Level (5 Timer Cards), I win 9 out of 10, means 90%.
-There were a few times when I was in a "do or die" position, mainly because I have 2 HP and I want to move to the nearest Village with Danger Level=1. If I meet a Shadow (20% probability), I will die. Many times I was succeed, but you can see other result in game #6, I was in a good position (Stats: 2-2-2) with 2 Timer Cards Left, I think I still can win the game because I still can Tell a Hero's Tale in the Castle of Light (STR/AGL/INT+2). I have 2 HP and I want to rest in the Village, I move, BAM ! A Shadow appears, and the Gladiator was going down.
- Note that to play in solo game of AoD and in multiplayer AoD is quite different, because in solo game you just deal with the game and yourself. But with other Players, it is very different, mainly because of the accept-reject Events, and sometimes the Friendly Blow.

I hope you enjoy my report.
Cheers!

Thanks for the stats on your game sessions. It's good to see the game can be won on the Hard Level in solo. I tried twice and lost both times then never went back. But now that I see your success/failure rate I'll give it another shot. Thanks!

I'm a little confused about how you have 5 turns to win? The rules state:

Before you REST, you must put one timer card on the bottom of the hero deck."

So, on turn 1 you put a card before you rest (one gone).
on turn 2 you put a card before you rest (two gone).
on turn 3 you put a card before you rest (three gone).
on turn 4 you put a card before you rest (four gone) - that's your last timer card gone before you REST, and it says you may not REST. So how do you get a fifth turn? Should it perhaps read that you put a timer card back at the end of your turn?

Apologies if I'm just missing something obvious. It matters to me too, as I just won my first solo easy game on turn 8 :p

So, on turn 1 you put a card before you rest (one gone).
on turn 2 you put a card before you rest (two gone).
on turn 3 you put a card before you rest (three gone).
on turn 4 you put a card before you rest (four gone, no more Timer Cards).

begin Turn 5, this is your last Turn, and you can not REST because you have no Timer card left.

So in this last Turn (Turn 5) all you have are the cards in your hand (after you REST at the end of Turn 4). You must win without REST, or your will, ummm, die trying

But you say you put your fourth (and last) time card BEFORE you rest the fourth time - therefore you couldn't rest the fourth time, so wouldn't get a fifth turn...? Do you see what I mean?

Quote:
In the Rulebook:
7. One Player Game
- At the beginning of the game, set aside X Hero Cards as the Timer Cards, where
X = 4 (hard level), 5 (normal), 6(easy) or 7 (beginner level).
Before you REST, you must put 1 Timer Card on the bottom of Hero Deck. If you don’t have any Timer Card left, you may not REST (Elzoof has conquered the island!).

I think you misunderstood (or my sentence is not clear enough, sorry ) the
Before you REST, you must put 1 Timer Card on the bottom of Hero Deck.
and
If you don’t have any Timer Card left, you may not REST (Elzoof has conquered the island!)

In solo game, the "price" to REST is you have to put 1 Timer Card on the bottom of the Hero Deck. Once you "pay" the price, you get the reward: you can REST.

It's like: I have only $30 in my pocket. I want to sleep in an Inn that cost $30/night. I pay $30 to the owner, then of course I can sleep that night.
It's not: I pay $30, then I have no more money, and the owner said,"Hey you have no money, you can not sleep here". He can't do that because I have already paid for that night.

So (back to the game) before REST it's either:
- you have 1 or more Timer Cards : yes, you can REST
or
- you have no Timer Cards: no, you cannot REST.

I hope it's clear this time

Yes, this makes it work as you described, thank you. I would suggest making a slight adjustment in the rule book to cover it. i'll have another game today, see how I get on :)
