Blokus is a modern classic family abstract game that has very few rules and so is easy to both teach and learn. Learning how to become good at it is another thing entirely.
Blokus consists of a square board with a raised grid. Each player has a set of plastic pieces that are identical except for colour. The pieces are all made up of 1 to 6 squares forming different shapes (reminiscent of Tetris pieces) and no two pieces are the same. On their first turn each player must play one piece. On subsequent turn’s players must play one piece that is touching an existing piece of theirs at a corner only. Pieces of the same colour must not be laid side-by-side. The aim of the game is to get as many of your pieces on the board and prevent other players from doing the same by blocking them - hence the name "Blokus".
The game works best with four people. It can work well with 2 people (each player takes two sets of coloured pieces and alternates playing them) but it is awkward with three players, although it can be done. It is a fun game of strategy and planning ahead. Players of all ages can enjoy it and it works in a variety of settings. Of all the family abstract strategy games this one is probably the best and has since spawned several equally impressive off shoots.
