If you're playing with the round pawns for trains, how do you indicate the direction your train is traveling? With just a couple of players it wouldn't be hard to remember, but with more people and lots of track on the board, I could see it being an issue.
Any tricks of the trade out there from veteran crayon railers?

Usually, you don't. Each person remembers their own direction, just as they remember where they're going to get or deliver what. The times you would want to reverse direction when you can't legally do so (in a city) are extremely rare.
You can get Miscellaneous Game Accessory, I suppose, but I've never seen it. They're really much too big to use as tokens.
I'm sure you could bodge something up if you really feel it's an issue, but I haven't seen it arise.

The empire builder minis are perfect for this. One of the minis is too large, the other 3 are perfectly sized. If you play with more than 3 players you will want 2 sets.
Have not played with the silly direction-less tokens for 20 years so I can't recall any tricks; we just "remembered" where we were pointing.

This was my solution to this very same problem. You should be able to pick up a Mexican Train set for less than 10 bucks.

I'll note that the standard tokens have an advantage: sometimes two pieces will end up on the same spot. The standard tokens stack.

Regarding this. We usually don't care if a player reversed in between two cities (usually only happens when they have lost a load due to disaster and want to pick it up again). I am not exactly sure why the rule is there in the first place. Only thing I can think of is that you only can reverse a real life freight train at a station, or passing point at least (most passenger trains in Europe are double headed and could reverse anywhere). However, I do not really see a gaming reason for being unable to do so.It would be poor planning already if you need to, but that happens, I don't see the reason to punish poor planner more than they do themselves.
However, if people have different opinions, I'll be glad to hear.

We've played 2 games of Eurorails so far, both 2 player and no problem remembering which direction we were going..although I did remind my wife once after she lost her load in a derailment

If you do need to turn around and the next town is very far away, you can always build a little 2 section side loop onto your track allowing for a turn around.

In my experience, the majority of the time the reason for wanting to turn around (Event Card draws) has nothing to do with poor planning.

That is what I said in the part above what you quoted as well. In our case it is usually the loss of a load, in which case, IMHO, a player is set back enough not to need to be also punished by driving to the next town before reversing. But then again, that is just the way we play.
The remark to poor planning was the other situation in which a player might want to reverse (this hardly ever happens very often with us, usually only to newbies), and in that case I also don't mind if they reverse.
