(Note: Back then I wasn't just a collector and player, I had a shop as well).
Great! Marvellous! Superb! Unbelievable! Out of stock! OUT OF STOCK!!! Well, it is at the time of writing but should be back as you read this. The superlatives aren't all mine, they are the true reaction we've received from customers who have timetripped. TimeTripper has proved to be one of the successes of 1980 for SPI and, according to the grapevine, a further series of games are being planned with different characters, such as a cowboy or musketeer, hurtling through time and space.
This game concerns the adventures of Tim, a Vietnam GI, who appears to be a mixture of Einstein, Marconi and A J P Taylor. "Stoned out of his mind" (SPI's description, not mine), Tim stumbles into a time warp and finds himself on the battlefield of any one of 36 famous historical battles or sites. The confused participants in the battle assume Tim to be an enemy and attack him. Tim has to stay alive and gain control of the warp to try to reach the present day again. At first, this is fairly easy, because he has plenty of ammunition, guns and accessories, but these will run out. Even when he does survive and jumps back into the warp, his troubles are not over. He needs experience at controlling the warp and so, invariably, he gets transported to another battle and further nasties. Even worse, if he crosses the present day, he moves into the future where 36 assorted science fiction encounters await him.
TimeTripper really is a very good, light-hearted game in the war-game vein. It is best played solitaire which probably accounts for the popularity. You wouldn't believe how many people bemoan the fact that they can't find opponents. There are eight pages of clearly written rules besides a little information about the 72 possible encounters. Rules for playing the game with more than one are included, under the heading TeamTripper, but I haven't tried them.
TimeTripper is currently 4.50 pounds and comes in a nice bright box.
The Story of my first Trip I staggered into the warp with the following equipment; 2 x MI Grenades, 1 x M72 Rocket Launcher, 1 x MI6 Automatic Rifle, 1 x Smith & Wesson .357 Pistol, a Radio and several reloads. My first stop was 81, 267, 234 BC and I was faced with a Tyrannosaurus Rex and two Ankylosauri. Never stopping to think, I fired a burst at them, killing all three, to my amazement. I had plenty of time now to recall the warp and climb in but I failed to direct it accurately so ended up on the Lebanon border in 1970. Peering through the smoke caused by Israeli mortar fire, I noticed seven Palestinian terrorists armed to the teeth and a trifle annoyed. Sporadic fire by us both as we dodged the mortars, resulted in two of them deceasing, but I realised the odds were not in my favour. In view of this, I recalled the warp and jumped in before the other five gentlemen could stop me. Still feeling strong, I arrived at the Battle of Liegnitz in 1241. Fortunately there were only four Mongolian Horse Archers but I seemed to lose my 'bottle', and almost immediately jumped the warp again. This time I landed in the Battle of the Little Big Horn, in 1876. Eight Sioux warriors and one Sioux archer appeared on the horizen. The warriors only had knives so I fired at the archer first. I was accurate and he fell. I figured that as the others only had knives, I could recall the warp, ready to jump in if neccessary. I didn't realise how quickly the warriors 'homed' in on their target, me! In fact, the next turn, all eight were next to me. I could survive an attack by one of them, even two maybe, but eight were a little on the tough side. My next journey was to the Happy Hunting Ground!

Very nice review.
SPI had a deluxe version in their Feedback with a standard full size map and 200 counters. I think that version would have been a winner if they had kept in business.
Yep,you should have just dropped all 9 Indians then warped out(isn't hindsite great) That made me recall the old Twilight Zone(or was it the Outer Limits) where the Sherman tank & crew got transported back to the Little Big Horn and they ended up helping Custer.Their grave markers awere shown at the end having died at the battle.
