I played a solo game using 3 heroes this past week. This was my first time playing this expansion so I got blind-sided when Harridan the Stalker awakened and started slamming the heroes with omen effects. I actually dropped one hero (Landrac the Wise) out of the game as he could make no headway at all with his low life point total. The other two heroes struggled on, one using armor (Gauntlets of Shadow) to block some of the omen hits, the other using several items that allowed him to heal quickly (Strength of the City and Combat Healing). They also whittled the wandering monster conga line down to avoid any more chain reactions of omen effects. After the game (Ronan eventually smacked Harridan back in her place) I wondered if using armor items to block wounds from omen effects is actually legal. The armor text reads "Any Phase", but can armor only be used in actual combat versus challenges, or can it also block damage done outside the challenge phase? I allowed it since I thought that thematically, the wounds from Harridan represented her stalking and swooping down on victims who used their armor to defend. Any thoughts on this?

From the general FAQ (v2.2):

Quote:
Any Phase/All Phases: This ability can be used during the ranged, melee, or magic phase of combat. However, “Before Combat” is not a phase, so abilities with the “Any Phase” or “All Phases” timing tag cannot be used “Before Combat.”

No Timing Tag: If a card has no timing tag, then it is either always on (such as the Belt of Strength with its “You receive +3 Body”) or it describes specifically when it can be used in its card text. (For example, “Padded Leather Armor” has the ability “Activate to cancel 1 wound being inflicted on your Hero,” so it can only be used when 1 or more wounds are being inflicted on your Hero.) This should be clear from the context of the card ability.

I checked the Gauntlets of Shadow card, and the text is pretty clear that it could be used anytime a wound is about to be inflicted (no phase or timing tag present).

Not sure what other armor you were using. If there actually was an "Any Phase" timing tag (for example: Rune Plate from the base set) then by the book it's probably not allowed.

Which expansion is Landrac the Wise from? I'm surprised to see non-Zanaga heroes being used, because I kind of felt the heroes in that expansion were slightly overpowered on purpose.

Edit: Oh, he's from Isle of Dread. This is a great resource:

Thanks for the reply newuser. I guess I'll have to have a closer look at some of the armor items to see if they can be used in the way I described.
I don't think I've ever looked over the rules faq either. I'll check it out since it looks like it addresses my question.

As far as the heroes go, all of the ones I used for this game were randomly picked from a stack of heroes from all the expansions mixed.
I play solo most games and I like to mix it up to see which ones perform the best. This game had three heroes, Ronan of the Wild, Okaluk & Rakash and Landrac the Wise.
