Right I've just started, have skimmed the rules and only own that and fortress europe. I'm interested in getting into it (inspite of the odd seeming staying power of infantry in the open).

So, having looked through the book, the three armies I'm interested in are Germany UK (normandy) and USA (normandy).

So... I've just cobbled together with my limited rules knowledge 600 point forces for the US and Germany, I'm only interested in collecting 2 (germany + one ally) so I'd love feedback:

German Grenadierkompanie:

Company HQ: 40pts
2xGrenadier platoons with panzerfaust SMG command: (2 squads) 240 pts for both
grenadier platoon: (2 squad) 110pts
Anti tank platoon with 2 3.7 pak36:70pts
MG platoon with 2 sections: 140
total: 600pts

US motorised infantry:
company HQ: 25pts
2xarmoured rifle platoon with one squad: 380
3 tank armoured platoon (I don't know the difference between the models atm): 205
total: 610

And that's it... if anyone cares to make any comment (or suggest a good British force) feel free too.

Lizbeth,

You are definitely on the right track, or should I say the road to ruin, and I'll look out a good British force for you as soon as I get the chance. I've never been too bothered about being 100% historically correct and field a Kazachya 600-pointer that never wins a game but looks bloody good as they are charging to their doom.

All the best,

Jim

Thank you Jim, one of that rare breed of rememberable war gamers due to text stylings.

Yes, I was looking to get a force that played well against eachother, I don't want to 'counter' either force with the other list, I want it to roughly match up.

For example, the americans are faster and slightly better equiped. But are outskilled by the defensive minded German list whose anti-tank platoon will give the American's a reason to be cautious in charging over the battle field. (Also, I've just looked, it seems like there's no rules difference between the various M4 models of Sherman, M4, M4A1, M4A2 I think, is this correct or am I missing something?)

Lizbeth,

You are quite correct but watch out for the Sherman Firefly that was up-gunned by the British to a 17pdr.

okay, thanks, so... what WAS the difference historically between those models of the sherman? Was it cosmetic or just superficial on the scale of FoW?

Lizbeth,

Click HERE for all you need to know about Shermans. I know Wikipedia is not always reliable, but in this case, it's got it right.

Regards.

That article is brilliant.

Also, I've tallied up the costs of it from waylandgames.co.uk : The Germans come to £59 not including shipping, does this sound like a good rate? (Bear in mind, I'll need to at some point get terrain and the US army)

Actually, on the note of terrain, can anyone recomend any?

EDIT: Also recomendations of paints and glue (I have some very , very old GW stuff, but that doesn't feel overly appropriate colour wise, though the purple legion is tottaly tempting >.>

I'll happily recommend Kerr and King for buildings.

If you want specialist paint (advantage of stronger pigments/fewer layers and requires less mixing to get that desired shade) you can't go wrong with the Vallejo model color range. Available at Wayland.

For trees you could either buy them finished, or as kits from Woodland Scenics. Personally I prefer to make them myself. All you need is some plaster, wire and lichen moss.

Kerr and King look good, but seem only for urban enviroments.

I'd love to build up the following:

2x2 village/road/fields
2x2 forests
2x2 town
all of which link into the final quarter which is an elevated town with a river running along the edge, meaning attaching tanks have a bridge or ford to cross, and infantry have to either wade it or go through thinner bridges.

I think that'd make a good variety (that's to some degree believable as a combination of terrain) to battle on.

Rivers by e.g. Galeforce Nine. But they're quite easy to make yourself as well.

When it comes to forest I recommend "area terrain". You take a pieve of MDF-board, plasticard or whatever catches your fancy. Add sand, paint and flock to your desire. Then put your trees on bases. When a base of miniatures goes into the woods the tress can be moved around as to accommodate the miniatures. Of course, it doesn't look as beautiful as a forest with the trees based on the "ground".

Yeah, I was going to go more for the 'spread trees on a definable base' than the removable donut set up, just because it allows you to track movement a bit better.

If I do get into it XD I dunno, the costs are looking rather steep and I might get a more traditional wargame.

Lizbeth,

Take your time, you don't have to get everything at once. I have found that part of the pleasure of this game is adding bits to it to keep it fresh.

yes, I know. But at the same time I'd like to get playing reasonably quickly, I'm not one for long drawn out hobby projects.

Games Workshop do a decent 6ft by 4ft gaming mat (flock on rubber) for under £25 which is a great base. You can pick up handmade hills, walls, hedgerows on e-bay on the cheap - the buildings are the costliest but not by too much. Kerr and King do some nice ones for Normandy.

is it bad that Gamesworkshop scare me?

And yeah, I'm going to put this on the back burner for a bit, sheer cost is a slight put off.

Is the the cost of the models putting you off or the terrain?

It's both put together, plus the books, plus time to put stuff together and paint it.

EDIT: Also, in being away I've developed an interest in the Eastern front, can anyone point me towards both the book for it and good armies? I know soviets are often quite numerous but I'd rather not have to spend a ton.

I would not go for the eastern front if you do not paint too many models. Even if you take a heavy tank company you will be painting many models.

Now that Cassino is out I would start there if it doesn't matter too much. It has rules for a very small infantry campaign. It is a good place to get your feet wet.

Then I would get terrain from worldworks games. They have downlaodable pdfs so you can make nice terrain quickly and cheaply. I use them for houses and buildings. You just print them out about 50% size to scale right.

I also use craft foam and cut out rivers, forests, ponds and roads.

Then I get 2 yards of felt from the local fabric store.

If you can't resist the Eastern front then go for Eastern Front book. The other books are rumored to be in new complation book coming out within a year. Also, an early war east front book should be in the works. Mid war should be solid for the forseeable future and the Eastern front book has ALL of the Russian mid-war armies.

Also the Open Fire starter still works because the Russians use Shemans.

Yeah, dunno, maybe italy might be interesting. I'm just not overly fond of Normandy, don't know what it is I just don't find it that interesting.

Where's Cassino set?
