I just got the expansion today.

With 160 cards, it seems that there are way too many cards per player (if played by less than 6 players).

I'm not sure what English or French rules say, but Russian rules state that you have to remove 2 "families" of symbols before playing. I don't really like that.

How do you play? What's your experience? I think that maybe you could just shuffle all cards together and then divide the card pile in 2 parts and play only with 1 part.

Thoughts?

We thought there were too many cards as well if played with fewer players, especially because it made it less likely that players would have matching shapes, or even close to matching, but the expansion can be excellent with larger groups.

The advice to remove 2 families is actually really important. If you just divide the deck in half, the chances of matching up shapes is dramatically reduced. If you remove to families, it lets the game work properly really, because it increases the number of matches that players get. Without those matches, the game is no fun.

Thank you for the response.

So how do you do this? Pick and remove 2 families at random before each game session? No extra preparations for games with 6 players? What about 5?

When playing with less than 6 people, we only play with the base set of cards. We've played with all cards before in a low player number game and it was just no fun at all. So now, when playing with less than 6 players, we just remove the expansion cards.

I prefer to play Jungle Speed with the Extreme Expansion with 2 card families (i.e. remove 3 families) and 3 of each special card for player counts 4 to 6.

7 or more ... play with 3 card families.
3 players ... play with 1 card family.

With reduced cards the game lasts about 15 minutes. It keeps the game fresh as you cycle different cards. Intensity is increased (compared to the base game) as the same card family frequently appears and making a split second decision about two cards from the same family is the game.
