Yesterday we got to play the POF expansion in the Alea Treasure chest. We have played more than 70 games of POF and games have been tight and exciting. We have a good group of 5/6 players who have been playing this for the last few years and this is one of our favorite games. So I was really looking forward to the expansion to see how much it adds to the base game.

The expansion basically adds 6 special character cards to the base game. All these cards are auctioned off every round after the regular auction. Each character adds to the things that you can do in the game. For instance the Banker gives you money, the Merchant allows you to get an item free in the next auction phase, one of the cards allows you to take 3 actions, whilst another helps you to compete a work without any profession card etc. I am not going into detail about each character here however.

Coming to actual gameplay, it does take a little bit longer for us to play because of more options and an additional auction round. At our peak we have managed to finish a 4 player game of POF in less than 30 minutes but this first game took us almost an hour.

Here are some impressions.

1. This is definitely for experienced POF players.
2. It adds a lovely dimension to the game and makes it more interesting and fun.
3. We seemed to be having more money in the beginning of the game and the tightness in the original game was not felt so much.
4. With 6 cards available and this being the first play there was not much competition but it could get more interesting with more plays.
5. Scoring was higher with the winner scoring 79 points and everyone crossing 60.

Overall and terrific addition to the base game and really worth it for experienced players.

Thanks for the review. Short & sweet. I also think this expansion is a great addition to the game.
