I just introduced this to my two sons today. I selected powers for them which would be easy to play - one of them had Zombie (never send tokens to the warp).
On one occasion he played a Compromise against an Attack card, and therefore lost the battle. I was unsure whether he got Consolation cards or not, as although they had died, they hadn't gone to the warp, and the rules say that you get consolation equal to the number sent to the warp. I suppose it depends on whether the 'dead' zombies go to the warp and then immediately go back to bases, or if they simply wander off inanely what the big pointy things sticking out of them are.
I'm inclinging towards the 'no consolation' interpretation, as this is compensation for losing tokens, but would welcome any differing poitns of view or clarifications!

I believe the power itself specifies how to treat consolation (which if memory serves was that the zombie does receive compensation even though he doesn't got to the warp).

It doesn't say that on the card in my edition (the Games Workshop version). Maybe it was clarified in a later version? Thanks for answering though!

The EON edition says that an alien gets compensation only if ships go to the warp. Some later editions have altered the Zombie to allow for compensation while other editions have not allowed for it. The current FFG edition also does not allow for compensation however, most experienced players with hundreds of plays house rule to allow compensation for the Zombie.

That last statement aside, the rulings from the different versions was quite informative.

Way back in the Eon days, Jack Kittredge (one of Cosmic's original co-creators) had a short-lived publication called "ENCOUNTER." Among other things, ENCOUNTER contained a slew of offical rulings and clarifications in response to reader questions. From issue #4:
Quote: Bob Trezise: ...the Zombie does not lose tokens so does that mean he does not get consolation? [Note: "consolation" is the original term for what's now called "compensation."] Jack Kittredge: The Zombie does get consolation since he lost the tokens. He just didn't send them to the Warp. So that was the official rule at one time, but it's since been changed (see FFG's FAQ or the online game) for whatever reason. I'm not saying one way's better or "more canonical" than the other, but it may explain the motivation for some of us old-timers to still console...er...compensate Zombie.

Try reading this thread, with the major thread contributors each logging hundreds, if not thousands, of plays over nearly 30 years. Bill was a one-time game developer with contributions to Cosmic Encounter. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/6423653#6423653

The FFG FAQ is very clear. Zombie does not get compensation/consolation since their ships don't go to the warp.

Thanks. I don't have the FFG version though, and have no idea whether it is othrwise identical - sometimes game balance changes between different versions of the same game. But this version makes sense to me (if it ever comes up again - it may well not!).

I’ve never thought about this before and we have always compensated the Zombie, it’s never even been question.
But.
That makes Zombie one of the best aliens (safe full attack strength + safe extra card draw via compensation + safe defending ally ability).
I want to change this with my group in order to play like the FFG ruling in this case. But I’ll have to say it before we draw aliens of course.
