Dear Troopers,
I'm not saying ABimP will be published soon, but since I'm trying to put together a cool package to entice my eventual publisher, I'd like to know what you, the players, would like to see in a commercial version of ABimP.
Obviously, the game would include quality components (thick and sturdy tiles being chief among them) and some scenarios.
But are there features/rule changes/bonus stuff that would encourage you to buy ABimP in stores? What would it take to make you interested in buying this game? More scenarios? More Events? A 1940s nude calendar? I'm all ears!
Thanks for your feedback,
E

Tiles? Really?
To be honest when I first started reading this ideas started flowing for components and one of them was actually "wouldn't it be cool if the map were nice sturdy tiles" and then the thought came back, "if it changed from cards to tiles, it really wouldnt be Airborne in my Pocket anymore would it?".
I mean, I like the idea of nice sturdy tiles, but I also really like the portability of this game. Quite literally being able to carry the whole game in my pocket, was what initially turned me on to the game.
I'm not saying I wouldn't buy it if you used tiles, I most certainly still will, but it would really change a rather fundamental charm of the game.

I will state the obvious one first - a box. Not one of those oversized types to make it look like there is a lot more game than there really is and ends up like a bag of chips with 25% product and 75% empty space. A well designed box and insert goes a long way in my opinion. Good Box Insert examples: Memoir '44, The Resistance, Settlers of Catan, Alhambra Big Box. Bad Box Insert Examples: Anything from Fantasy Flight, Power Grid, Pandemic. I am always disappointed when I have to get a Plano or a bunch of baggies to finsih the job of storage after paying good money for a game. END of rant.
I used some of the soldiers from an Axis & Allies miniature game that worked real well for ABiMP. I believe these are 15mm scale like Flames of War. I think something like this would be nice. Maybe even include some tanks etc. for when these come up on tiles.

Depending on which way you want to go (high end or low) you might include little plastic guns, radios, demo and other equipment (perhaps that attaches to the soldier mini)? That's high end of course. It might even be released as a "booster pack." Sort of like the 3D airplanes for Wings of War.

I don't know if my point of view have some value, because i usually don't like solo games (boardgaming for me is a social affair - i don't even care if i win or loose, i just like the competition with my friends - when i'm alone i play videogames) and because i'm cheap, so i may not be your "target", anyway AimP always had some appeal to me, 'cause the theme and the mechanic (still have to build it...).
What i'd like are - optional rules for co-op and 1vs1 games... three games in one! - the square shape of the tiles are the bigger obstacle to a card-only game, so i'd throw away the portabilty and i'd go for Carcassone (or Gheos)-like quality tiles - plastic toys for the player(s) pawns could be nice, and miniatures for the enemy also could allow for some advanced rules with them moving, pursuing or retreating. - Expansions. If i know that there will be new features i'll know that the replayability of the game is high... i mean; look at M44: snowy terrain, desert, with new rules are a way to "change" gameplay a bit and trying something different - Players on vehicles: the player find a way to travel on a tank: new scenarios and new gameplay....
Hope this help

Well, Fabio, there are already many ABimP scenarios for 1 vs 1 and coop play. I'll take note of players moving in vehicles for a possible expansion

A published version would be 2-player coop, with optional multiplayer rules, and would include various scenarios, that's for sure.
And you don't need to worry about expansions, believe me

See a comercial AbimP sounds very nice for me. The game can be as it is, with a price near 9.99 (like Pocket Battles). Maybe with one or two expansion in the original box, I don't know. A good idea is the big box of the game comes with a small pocket box inside!!!

I stumbled upon ABimP a couple of months ago and have been on the fence about downloading the files — it sounds like a cool game, but do I want to deal with the hassle of printing & cutting or the expense of an Artscow deck?
I only say that to show that I'm a prospective player/purchaser of ABimP, not a familiar player.
The things that have attracted me to ABimP (aside from the theme, which is essential, of course) are that it's quick, small & cheap. Lose any of those, and you'll likely lose me as a customer.
- Having a quick, before-bedtime game that isn't on the computer/iPod is very attractive.
- Having a tiny game that doesn't take up much shelf space and that can travel is a major attraction. I can see the temptation of tiles, but unless you can keep the portability, (maybe a 2-deck box size) I'm less interested.
- In the $10-15 range, I'm there, as Artscow & printing myself cost that much. $30+ I probably won't buy it. In the middle range, I could go either way, but I'm less likely to buy it.
As a beginning ABimPer, with lots of other games competing for my attention, I'm not interested in bunches of add-ons unless they're add-ons that aren't necessary, and can be purchased separately once I become hooked.
One more data point for you. Thanks for making this game available for free for so long, and good luck with the commercial version!
(I finally did decide to download the basic game, but have yet to print or play it.)

I write as one who has been interested in this game but don't have the money for an artscow deck and don't have the skill for a nice print and play. That said I've looked into all your expansions and love where this is going.
Thus said, my two cents would be...
-Low Cost -Better Quality then I can make with artscow had i the money to do that. (for me that would mean tiles to play) -inclusion of solo and 2 player rules -as much inclusion of expansions and variety as possible (starting with the ones that expand the basic game over the ones that add attached mini games like the beach head or parachuting ones...i want those later in an expansion :) - Some sort of unique player piece (mini figs over wooden discs/cubes)
Just thoughts.
I have been considering how to do this as cheaply as possible but if a commercial set was available I would go for it. I love that ZIMP got published but that theme doesn't attract me...AIMP does.

I would love to see tiles. I own the game and all the expansions but if it had nice production values I'd probably buy it all over again. If it were only cards that would be harder since I already have the cards.
The only problem is that tiles means a bigger box. I'd love to see it in a smallish box (like the size Roll Through the Ages comes in). A RTTA size box with tiles? Maybe some sort of player mat and tokens for equipment? That would be awesome.

Hey Ed!
How about this:
The main box would hold Carcassonne-quality, thick tiles, but included in the box would be a small tuckbox, with poker card-thick tiles, so the game can be portable too. That way, you'd get 2 sets of tiles...
Also, you can be sure the art would be jazzed up for the outside tiles, and probably the cards, too. When you see the commercial version of D-Day Dice: Free Trial Version, you'll see what I mean...
The main game would probably hold the "Currahee!" expansion, since it really does belong in the base game in my opinion (it puts the "airborne" in ABimP). It would also probably include 40 Events, to get rid of the "shuffle every hour" rules and put more variety in the game.

Just make sure to keep the solo play option in the commercial release. That's the only way I've played it, and it's my favorite solo game.
Otherwise, location tiles would be nice. I'd keep the rest of it card-based. It works well that way.

Hey i would like some kind of filing box design for the package so that all different card editions could be kept separately (i use one for the pnp version). And if you expect to do expansions for it, try to do a box design that is expandable too. Like if you choose a ammo-box design, with buckles, it would be nice to add some straps to the next expansion to strap these together. Or make the initial box bigger and sell the expansions just in foil. I would be absolutely into sturdy tiles. And if you want them to be weatherproof, laminate them... Please include a set of themed dice and either a magnetic character plate or some kind of plastic board like mastermind. And of course a miniature!!
I definitely look forward to it. Flashhawk

Well, Logan, for now, all my energies are spent on D-Day Dice and its upcoming Kickstarter campaign. Once the game is out to the printer, I'll direct my energies to the commercial version of ABimP. Don't worry, it's not like I've forgotten it.

I am, actually. And things are going well. Stay tuned for some official updates very soon. And an ABimP Kickstarter before the summer...
