I think the rules are pretty clear as far as your question goes: no, once a die has been "set aside" in any roll it may not be re-rolled.
A rule that is confusing though is this wording in the English rules: "To do so (roll the dice a 3rd time), you put one die aside from your second roll".
That is incorrect. It should be "at least one die" according to the German rules (mindestens).
