We were playing CR last night, and a large part of my initial build was throughout the western Taklimakan Desert, entering from the south via Xigaze to Hotan and on up to Kashi, with a branch line to Korla ending in Urumqi - 30 million worth of track connected to desert mileposts, all told. As it turned out, it wasn't the best of conceived projects I've ever had, as shortly after its completion, the Taklimakan sandstorms event was triggered, wiping out nearly my entire track in the northwest. My train was even on the very first desert milepost in from Korla at the time, so it also cost me a load and a turn(fortunately I was able to return to Urumqi on what was left of my track to replenish the Oil I lost), making it the worst disaster I've ever seen a Rails game.
The only thing I've seen that comes close is when my wife got "Earthquaked" just outside Tokyo in Nippon Rails, losing a pile of valuable goods, a couple turns, and the game. Needless to say, having my desert track completely wiped out was more of a result of an overly-ambitious building project, and an unwise one at that, but that's what's good about CR, you pretty much have to gamble to win, but those gambles certainly don't always pay off.

I always try to minimize desert milepost usage when building west early.

Nah, I have a better one. I was playing Lunar Rails once and my opponent spent all his initial cash build for his first delivery, connecting his starting city to the delivery city, with no stops along the way. I made my first delivery before he arrived and it triggered a meteor strike. The strike hit his track of course. He had no cash so he could not reconnect to that or any other city. Had to concede without ever delivering a load.

We play our crayon rail games with a bank. You can borrow 10 currency units three times in the game, but you have to pay 20 to cover each one you take. Obviously, you can't win if you have enough money and still haven't paid back your loan(s).

My wife and I were playing an older edition of Empire Builder, without Mexico. She had just gotten to Seattle when the Columbia river flooded, washing out her bridge to Portland and the rest of the U.S. She only had 2 million left and was only connected to Seattle and Vancouver. She discarded three sets of cards before giving up completely.

That's not nearly as bad a being 1 turn from delivering 2 big loads to Kashi and another player drew the "Party Congress" card. Eight whole turns wasted to get a measly $10.
