The flexible Memoir '44 game system developed by Richard Borg is a classic design that needs no introduction. In fact, the game really doesn't need another review that describes the components and the play experience. Please allow me to share a few thoughts about the game as we chronicle my journey through the Memoir '44 universe.

I paid $35 for a gently used copy of the game. I was already enchanted with Battle Cry so I knew what I was getting into... WRONG!!!

Attack of the Space Mutants -- classic 1950s sci-fi for Memoir ‘44

This was the first scenario I created. I bought a copy of Attack! for the miniatures ($14.00) and found a cool helicopter in a kid's playset at Goodwill ($3.09) -- I already had hundreds of 1:72 scale army men and the flag stickers.

Korean War Memoir ‘44 -- Pusan Perimeter and the Naktong River

A few T-34 tanks ($7.50) added some flavor to this Korean War sceanrio. I also spent $9.99 on WWII army men.

Memoir ‘44 -- Long Range Desert Group scenario with a raid behind Axis lines

I bought the desert/winter board ($11.99) and the Med expansion ($24.99) and instantly came up with a few new scenario ideas.

Ice Station Memoir -- when the Cold War was REALLY cold

Vintage Chopper Strike pieces ($7.28) added authentic Cold War hardware to this homage to a classic adventure movie. I purchased a few East Front terrain tiles ($6.00) on eBay.

Korean War Memoir ‘44 -- Chinese Intervention Scenario

I eventually purchased six boxes of IMEX 1:72 scale Korean War soldiers ($59.94) but consider that to be money well spent. The mortar crews are super cool.

Manchuria 1945

My first use of the Japanese tanks ($4.00) that I bought on an eBay impulse.

Missiles Of Persia -- The 2012 Raid On Iran

I already owned several sets of excellent miniatures produced by Table Tactics so this scenario was a freebie!

Memoir '73 -- Egypt vs. Israel on the Suez Canal

I painted a few A&A tanks I had on hand but this was the first appearance of a veritable fleet of trucks ($35.00) I purchased from my fellow Geeks.

Palestine 1917

The army men from Age of Imperialism and the 1:72 WWI figures came from my collection... as did the biplanes from Dogfight.

Nomonhan 1939: Zhukov vs. the Japanese at the Khalkhin-Gol

I had this Maxim gun and a few WWII Japanese soldiers in a box. Another freebie scenario.

“The Barking Dead” -- Zombie Dogs vs. the National Guard at the 2011 AKC Championships

The zombie dogs cost me $7.99 but everything else came out of inventory.

Operation Sealion

The terrain pack ($24.95) was a big plus for this scenario. That lighthouse tile is great!

Memoir 2030: The Spratly Islands Incident

This one was expensive. The Pacific expansion set me back $14.99 and I spent another $26.97 on 1:72 modern special forces miniatures. These frogmen are superb.

Memoir '47 -- Dust Wars combat at the brigade level

I already owned Dust but the breakthrough boards ($25.35) took a chunk out of the budget. However, I will certainly use these big maps many times in the future.

Not counting hobby paint and a few other small items my total investment appears to be $317.88 but I'm thrilled with the results. I haven't had this much fun since I was 12 years old.

Buy a copy of Memoir '44. For the price of an extra large pizza and a few beers your family and friends can enjoy hours of old-fashioned board game fun. I would recommend Memoir for kids of all ages. If you own the game but need a few army men for a special project, zap me a GeekMail. I'll see what I can do.

I am afraid to total up my investment into M'44... Not to mention all the 10mm and n-scale miniatures.

Mental calculation... Holy Bat S%#@... Great I feel nauseous now...

Thanks Pete

It's cheap fun compared to ASL...the full shebang has set me back probably 10x Pete's amount...but I haven't had so much fun since I was 15 and played my first ever S & T!

Cheers, Pete! I totally second your opinion and admire your creativity, but don't want to total my own expenses for the system...robotStarting with 2 base sets plus...xxx that makes a TOTAL FUN

Worth every penny. I've got everything except the silly backpack and I've got two base sets. Most of the miniatures are painted and I've played hundreds of games. That's cheap entertainment says I.

Pete,

I have two of everything (painted) except those sets that defy duplication and I'm getting a bit long in the tooth for backpacks. Since the system came out, I've still spent less than my kids have done on Playstation and X-box games.

...and I've had a damn sight more replay value.

Regards,

Jim

Here is an image of the storage "system" I use for Memoir '44:

Everything is in a pile on the bed in our guest room.

We're not expecting any company, so I'm OK with it!

You, Sir, are a legend. You have the imagination of a child, but the historical knowledge of a college professor. Out of that comes brilliance. Bravo! Bravo!

Hey Pete! Excellent summary! Are you going to do a sister review on all the use you've gotten out of your Battle Cry games?

Great idea. I should update my lengthy chronicle of Session Reports but it will have to wait... I've got two more scenario recipes cooking on the Battle Cry stove right now!

My eight-year-old and I love Memoir. We first started playing when he was 6 and still pull the game out regularly - we have plans on playing through the entire campaign book this summer.
