My girlfriend and I have been browsing these forums looking for an answer but can't seem to find one. Our question is: can you expand the same settlement onto different terrain types on successive turns? i.e. Turn 1 I expand Settlement A onto Clearing. Turn 2 I expand Settlement A onto Rock.
Fairly straight forward but we can't seem to find clarification in the rules. I say you can, she says you can't. Please tell me I'm right so I have bragging rights...

If I understand your question, yes you can. When you choose to expand your settlement, you choose the terrain to expand into that turn. On a later turn, if you choose to expand that settlement again, you can expand into a different terrain type if you like.
But I find the question strange. One wouldn't think that a settlement can only expand onto one terrain type for the rest of the game, and that the players have to remember which terrain type each settlement is locked into. Could you explain her reasoning?

Not to mention settlements don't maintain some identity. They can be divided and merged. If "settlement A" gets split into 2 or more settlements, which one is "settlement A"? Or if "settlement A" and "settlement B" are merged, is the resulting settlement "A" or "B"?

HA! That's what I thought (although I may end up sleeping on the couch tonight...).
I thought it was fairly clear but she makes a compelling argument and it really isn't clear in the rules.
Our first game went fairly quickly (although we had a few other rules incorrect, I placed some new settlement huts on level 2) so she thought maybe expanding was too easy. As far as splitting settlements, she thought maybe then you could choose another terrain.
Thanks so much for the fast response. I think we'll have a lot of fun with this game...

Expanding IS too easy... if you're not careful, you'll find yourself out of huts too soon, and with no legal spot to put a temple or tower, you suddenly find yourself instantly losing the game.
Have fun!

rules wrote: The player chooses one of his Settlements to expand. After that, he chooses one type of terrain (Jungle, Clearance, Sand, Rock or Lake) on which he would like to build.
Now, he occupies every field of that terrain type that is adjacent to the Settlement. For each level of the field, one hut is placed: on a level 1 field one Hut, on a level 2 field two Huts, etc. It seems clear in the rules to me. No restriction is mentioned, so why would one assume there is one?
The rules also don't say you're not allowed to do an expansion that would place an odd number of huts, so I wouldn't assume such a restriction exists.
I too am curious: what was her compelling argument?
I guess she is interpreting "The player chooses one of his Settlements to expand. After that, he chooses one type of terrain (Jungle, Clearance, Sand, Rock or Lake) on which he would like to build." to mean "on which he would like to build for the rest of the game"? But this is all in the context of executing a single turn. You might as well argue that once you pick the settlement, you can't expand any other settlements for the rest of the game.
