(Gib version)

Kinda wondered what you do about city spaces during expansion - rules clearly say expand 'tokens' but does that includes cities in this case - or is contraception compulsory????? We have been assuming a city is one token in this case - probably doesn't matter too much as long as it's consistent, but would like any official word :O)

This is a blatant example of frivolous spending.

A city is no tokens. Once placed, cities do not expand beyond their boundaries; they simply overpopulate.

Cities don't grow new people.

You can throw extra people into a city area and you can move people through it (with roads) but all the extra people die as they can't be supported (helps repel an attack though).

Thanks for the definitive replies guys. In the Gibson version there are no roads so cities can actually become quite a barrier at times.

The Gibson edition may include Playing Piece definitions in the rules like the Avalon Hill edition did:

AH rules wrote:
5.2 Tokens are square, and arc used to represent rural populations. When the term token is used, this does not include ships or cities.

Just quoting myself here to make sure I've not missed something. Because 'no tokens can remain in a city area' (after conflict and city building) this means that a city effectively stops population tokens from moving /though/ an area with a city in it. We had a game where a player built a city in the top left space which then stopped him moving population between Italy and Eastern Europe except by boat.

That is right, isn't it?

That is correct. The only way to move through a city area is to get the Roadbuilding Civ card. Which aggravates Epidemic, Civil Disorder and Iconoclasm and Hersey.

For the benefit of those who don't know, Roadbulding is part of Advanced Civilization, so not really a factor here.

Sorry about that. I subscribe to both the CIV and ADV CIV threads and did not pay attention to which thread I was in. blush
