The monkey wrench does use the term "each time a hero wins a fight ..." and this is not clearly defined in the basic rules. Is a win only achieved while causing a wound with highest dice and doubles or is a win already achieved when the zombie is fended off ?

I believe a win is any time the hero rolls one higher fight diece than the zombie. Regardless whether the zombie is killed or fended off the hero still won that fight.
