I recently decided to play the game solitaire for the first time in a while.

I'll post this turn by turn as a I play it. It's different than standard play in that you're only playing 1 card at a time from a face down hand rather than each side playing a card simultaneously with all of their cards known.

NTA - Neutral Tribe Activation
PA - Political Action
SA - Supply Action

= 58 BC - The Germans go first.

G1 - Menapi (1). The Germans decide to bring the Menapi over via an NTA. This gives them an easy escape route should the Romans adopt the "Rhine Offensive" strategy, and it serves as a launching point to attack the rest of Belgica.

R1 - Pictones (1). The Romans activate Aquae Sextae and opt for the standard opening move. Legions VIII and IX attack the Helvetii from the south, while Legion XI and Caesar force march to attack from the west. Legions VII and XII remain in the territory of the Allobroges. The Helvetii score a paltry 2 hits before being wiped out, though the Romans had a bit of a scare since it took all three rounds to finish the job.

Legions IX and XI (1 hit each) remain in Helvetii territory, while Legion VIII and Caesar regroup to the Allobroges area. Roman supply now at 13.

G2 - Santones (2). The Germans briefly consider using their second NTA, but the Santones are too isolated to help with anything at this point. Instead, the Germans opt to activate Germania and Menapi. Ariovistus and 1 unit attack the Treveri, with the Menapi tribe coming in as a reserve. The other two German units move into Menapi territory. Ariovistus is unable to compel them to join his cause, and a fight ensues. The Treveri are defeated, although a German and Menapi tribal unit suffer 1 hit each.

Ariovistus and the German unit regroup to Menapi territory, leaving the Menapi tribe to hold the Treveri area.

R2 - Tarbelli (1). The Romans activate Allobroges and move the four legions and one Allobroges tribal unit into the Santones area. Caesar softens up the Sequani and only 1 hit (against Legion VIII) is scored against the Romans.

All units decide to remain in the Sequani area.

G3 - Mandubii (2). The Germans would like to bring the Mandubii in via an NTA, but I know they'll just get squashed if I do since they wouldn't be able to reinforce it in time. Instead they activate Menapi and Treveri. Ariovistus and one German unit, along with the Menapi in reserve, attack the Remi. The other two German units attack Atrebates. Ariovistus again fails to compel the Gauls, but both are conquered with no losses.

The Menapi regroup to the Treveri area, but the Germans remain in their newly conquered areas.

R3 - Major Revolt. The Romans consider moving again but decide to meddle, sending the Menapi home (now neutral).

G4 - Sequani (2). Well, that figures. The Germans decide to convince the Menapi of the error of their ways. They activate the Remi and Atrebates areas, and send all four German units to attack the Menapi, with Ariovistus in the lead. This time Ariovistus is successful at his particular brand of diplomacy and the Menapi join without a fight.

The damaged German units regroup to Atrebates, Ariovistus and one German unit regroup to Remi, and the Menapi regroup to Treveri.

R4 - Germania (3). Normally I would consider using this card as a PA or SA, but with so little damage so far I decided to be aggressive and press the attack. The Romans activate Helvetii, Allobroges and Sequani. Legion IX moves to Sequani territory, the Allobroges units sit, and the four legions already in Sequani move to Mandubii. With Caesar only scoring 1 hit in the first round the Mandubii decide to stay and fight, hoping to cause casualties, and score 4 hits!

Unfortunately, their plan of retreating on the next round never materializes and they're wiped out. Still, damage done. All four legions remain in Mandubii.

G5 - Minor Revolt. The Bellovaci join the Germans. This gives them two units in a fortified area, and a possible area of retreat for Ariovistus.

R5 - Tolosates (1). With the legions battered a bit the Romans decide to use their NTA for the turn. The Tolosates join the Romans.

= Harvest

The harvest is normal (roll: 4).

= Units Go Home

Legions VIII and XI return to Aquae Sextae. The rest (Caesar and 2 legions in Mandubii, Legion IX in Sequani) remain in the field.

Ariovistus and 1 full strength German unit winter in Remi. The other German units return home to Germania.

All Gallic tribes return home.

= Tribe Area Control

The Romans control six tribes (Volcae, Tolosates, Allobroges, Helvetii, Sequani and Mandubii). The Germans control five tribes (Menapi, Atrebates, Treveri, Remi and Bellovaci).

= Supply and Attrition

Roman supply is reduced by 4 for the wintering legions. Their supply is now at 9.

= Replacements

All damaged German and Gallic units have their strength increased by one except the Helvetii, whom the Romans choose to leave weakened. All legions are brought to full strength, reducing Roman supply to 2.

= Roman Supply

The Romans receive 5 supply points (Aquae Sextae x 2, Volcae, Sequani, Mandubii) bringing their total back up to 7.

= Reinforcements

The Romans do not receive reinforcements this turn.

= Synopsis

The Germans are pleased with the way things turned out this turn, especially since they bled the Romans at Alesia. The Romans will probably need to spend one card on supply next turn since their reinforcements did not arrive. Should the Romans have used the Germania (3) card for supply points. We shall see.

= 57 BC - Romans go first

R1 - Allobroges (2). The Romans activate the Mandubii and Trans Gaul areas. I consider attacking into Germany, or into Remi, but decide that it's too risky without reinforcements at this point. Instead I send the three legions in Mandubii to attack the Aedui. The Aedui are crushed, but do manage to score one hit on Legion VII.

The Romans regroup all three legions back to Mandubii to guard against Ariovistus, figuring I can garrison that area later.

G1 - Sequani (2). Feeling hemmed in by the Romans at Alesia, the Germans decide to take a PA, targeting the Sequani. I figured they might die, but would at least deprive the Romans of some support and force them to garrison the area later. My roll (3) was successful, and the Sequani not only flip, but actually manage to score 2 hits on the Roman legion while only taking one themselves.

Legion IX retreats to Allobroges in order to fight another day.

R2 - Atrebates (1). The Romans decide they had better smash the fickle Sequani before the Germans decide to reinforce it. The three legions and two gauls in Allobroges move north and attack. Legion VIII takes 1 hit, but the Sequani are reminded what happens to those who dare break their alliance with the Romans.

Legion XI and one Allobroges unit remain to garrison the area, while the other units regroup back to Allobroges territory.

G2 - Remi (1). Hm, can't do much with that. The Germans decide to simply activate Atrebates and send its unit to reinforce the Bellovaci in case Caesar had any ideas of attacking there.

R3 - Mandubii (2). The Romans activate Mandubii and Helvetii. Now low on garrison units, two Helvetii units are sent to Sequani to help hold the area so that the legions, if necessary, can move elsewhere. All of the units in Mandubii (3 legions, 2 gauls) move into Leuci. The Leuci are utterly crushed.

All units regroup to Mandubii. Again, the Romans figure they can garrison the area later, or possibly trap the Germans if they decide to get greedy.

G3 - Germania (3). Still hemmed in by the Romans, I opt for another PA attempt, this time targeting the Arverni in an effort to open up with western front. Unfortunately, the attempt (6) failed.

R4 - Britannia (2). Drat, no port controlled. So, instead I decide that the Romans need a bit of supply help after some of the bleeding last turn and this turn, so I do an SA for 3 SP. Roman supply now at 10.

G4 - Tarbelli (1). I use an NTA to bring the Tarbelli over to the anti-Roman coalition.

R5 - Treveri (2). Ok, time to garrison the empty areas and see if the Germans bite. Mandubii and Allobroges are activated. The remaining Allobroges Gallic unit is move to Aedui. Legion XII and two Gauls from Mandubii are moved into Leuci, leaving just two legions (including Caesar) in Mandubii. This is a risky move. A Major or Massive Revolt here could be fatal.

G5 - Menapi (1). Alas, it was not to be. Another poor card for the Germans, who again don't even get to use their second NTA. I decide to avoid the Roman held positions since they are two well defended, and activate the Bellovaci area. I send one Bellovaci and the Atrebates unit into Esuvii territory, figuring any damage I take will be repaired anyway as long as I take one or two hits. Things worked out, as the Esuvii were defeated while only scoring two hits.

The Atrebates unit stays to garrison Esuvii.

= Harvest

The harvest is normal (roll: 5)

= Units Go Home

The Sequani, Leuci and Aedui return home and join the Romans. The Esuvii retun home and join the Germans. Caesar (who must return home) and the two legions sitting in Allobroges territory return to Trans Gaul. The other three legions (legion VII in Mandubii, legion XI in Sequani, and legion XII in Leuci) remain in the field.

Ariovistus (who must also return home) and the German unit he's with at Remi return to Germania.

= Tribe Area Control

The Romans control eight tribes (Volcae, Tolosates, Allobroges, Helvetii, Aedui, Sequani, Mandubii and Leuci).

The Germans control seven tribes (Menapi, Atrebates, Treveri, Remi, Bellovaci, Esuvii and Tarbelli).

= Supply and Attrition

The Romans pay 3 SP to keep three legions in the field, reducing their total to 7.

= Replacements

All damaged German and Gallic units have their strength increased by one except the Helvetii and Allobroges, whom the Romans choose to leave weakened. All legions are brought to full strength, reducing Roman supply to 3.

= Supply

The Romans receive 5 supply points (Aquae Sextae x 2, Volcae, Sequani, Mandubii) bringing their total back up to 8.

= Reinforcements

Legions XIII and XIV arrive.

= Synopsis

This was a fruitful turn for the Romans who managed to acquire two more tribes even with no reinforcements arriving last turn. It was risky to push Caesar hanging out there but it paid off. However, it was relatively low hanging fruit. Anything more difficult would not have been worth it given the low SP's the Romans had left. That combined with the defection of the Sequani, ruled out more aggressive play.

For the Germans it was a disappointing turn, with yet another turn of only one NTA, and that the Tarbelli. At least the PA against the Sequani was successful, slowed the Roman advance and bled them a little bit. Plus, none of the tribes currently controlled by the Germans switched sides, so that's something at least.

= 56 BC - Germans go first

G1 - Aedui (2). I briefly toy with the idea of doing a PA against the Aedui but decide that getting the Germans across the Rhine is more important. Germania and Atrebates are activated Ariovistus and 1 german unit move into Treveri, with the other german units move into Menapi. The gallic Atrebates unit moves to Remi.

R1 - Cardurci (2). As much as I would like to use an NTA with this card I decide that Mandubii is too vulnerable right now. Instead, I activate Leuci and Sequani, sending legions XI and XII to Mandubii for defense.

G2 - Leuci (1). Blech. The Germans activate Menapi, sending the german units to Remi and the gallic unit to Treveri.

R2 - Helvetii (3). The Romans would love to use this for SP, but with the german hordes massing on the frontier at Treveri I decide to use it for ops, activating Trans Gaul, Aedui and Allobroges. Caesar and all four legions attack the Boii, one Allobroges gallic unit moves to Aedui and the two Aedui gallic units move to reinforce Mandubii. The Boii are crushed. Caesar and three legions regroup to Aedui territory, while Legion IX remains in Boii.

G3 - Minor Revolt. The Cardurci rise in rebellion against the Romans. I chose them since the Romans are out of position to attack, and they could be used to steal the Volcae territory if they're lucky.

R3 - Atrebates (1). Time to crack skulls. Caesar and three other legions force march into Treveri to bust up the party forming there. Roman supply now at 4. The Romans deliver a nasty first round blow (7 hits), forcing Ariovistus and the german unit to retreat to Remi, while the Remi retreat home. The Treveri are left to fight to the death and manage to score 2 hits before being eliminated. Caesar regroups to Mandubii, while the other three legions remain in Treveri.

G4 - Esuvii (1). Blech again. The Germans decide to try to draw the Romans away from Ariovistus by attacking Volcae with the Cardurci, and are successful! The Volcae are defeated, though at the cost of two hits. Both gallic units regroup to Cardurci, though, for fear of reprisals and hope of sneaking in later.

R4 - Treveri (2). The Romans activate Boii and Allobroges to play defense for now, sending legion IX to Volcae and the Allobroges unit to Boii.

G5 - Allobroges (2). Finally a decent card. The Germans attempt a PA against the Allobroges which could clog up the eastern corridor and weaken his northern frontier forces. Alas, it fails.

R5 - Menapi (1). The Romans could attack and easily capture another tribe, but decide to play it safe and take 2 SP. Roman supply now at 6.

= Harvest

The harvest is normal (roll: 2)

= Units Go Home

The Treveri and Boii return home to join the Romans. The Romans keep four legions in the field (XI and XII at Mandubii, VIII and XIII at Treveri). Ariovistus, feeling vulnerable, returns with all german units to Germania.

= Tribe Area Control

The Romans control 10 tribes (added Boii and Treveri) while the Germans remain at 7 tribes (lost Treveri, gained Cardurci).

= Supply and Attrition

The Romans pay 4 SP to keep four legions in the field. Roman SP reduced to 2.

= Replacements

The Romans repair two damaged legions. Roman SP at zero. All gallic and german tribes gain 1 strength except the Helvetii and Allobroges.

= Supply Production

The Romans receive 5 SP's as before. Total Roman SP is now at 5.

= Reinforcements

None.

= Synopsis

This was a pretty lousy turn for the Germans, though at least they acquired the Cardurci. It's a shame that PA against the Allobroges failed. That would have messed up the Romans. The Romans, however, are generally happy with things, though the supply situation isn't good.

= 55 BC - Romans go first

R1 - Mandubii (2). The Romans activate Trans Gaul and Mandubii. Two legions from Trans Gaul move to Volcae, while the other two move to Boii to prepare for an assault on the Arverni. Meanwhile, the two legions in Mandubii attack the Remi. The legions only manage to score 1 hit, however, so the Remi retreat to Bellovaci territory.

G1 - Tolosates (1). Ick. I decide that I had better defend the Cardurci with four legions seemingly headed their way, so I activate the Tarbelli and move them to Cardurci territory.

R2 - Baggage Train. Roman supply now at 8 SP.

G2 - Remi - (1). Double ick. The Germans send Ariovistus and 1 german unit to Menapi.

R3 - Biturges (2). The Romans use their NTA. The Biturges join the Roman cause.

G3 - Bellovaci (3). This card would have been more useful if the Germans had had higher cards earlier in the turn to move units into position. As it stands, I activate Menapi, Germania and Esuvii. Ariovistus and 1 german unit move from Menapi territory into Atrebates, two german units move from Germania to Menapi, and the gallic unit in Esuvii moves into Bellovaci territory.

R4 - Aedui (2). The two legions at Volcae and Boii move to attack the Arverni, with Caesar's legion X leading the way. The Arverni are defeated, though they do manage to score four hits. Caesar and legion VII regroup to Volcae, while legion IX and XIV remain at Arverni.

G4 - Minor Revolt. The Mandubii betray and take up arms against the Romans!

R5 - Andes (2). The Germans really wish the Romans had only flipped a 1-op card. Too bad for them. The Romans decide they need to recapture Alesia and send two legions from Remi (reserve) and two from Treveri to attack. Alesia is recaptured, though at the cost of six hits! The Roman legions remain at Mandubii and the Treveri regroup home.

G5 - Carnutes (1). I play this as an NTA. The Carnutes take up arms against the Romans!

= Harvest

Good harvest (roll: 6)

= Units Go Home

The Arverni and Biturges return home to join the Romans. All Roman legions return to Trans Gaul except legions IX and XII in Mandubii. Ariovistus and 1 german unit winter in Atrebates. The other two german units return home.

= Tribe Area Control

The Romans are at 12 (gained the Arverni and Biturges), the Germans are at 8 (gained the Carnutes).

= Supply and Attrition

The Romans pay 2 SP to keep two legions garrisoned at Mandubii. Roman SP now at 6.

= Replacements

All gallic and german units receive replacements except the Allobroges and Helvetii. The Romans use their remaining SP to repair legions. This still isn't enough to fix all the damage, though. Legions VII and XIII are only at strength 3.

= Supply Production

The Romans receive 6 SP (1 more than last turn since they captured Arverni territory).

= Reinforcements

None.

= Synopsis

Things were going very badly for the Germans until the Mandubii flipped. Still, the Romans are pleased, gaining another two tribes this turn, while the Germans only acquired the wimpy Carnutes. A good hand for the Romans, while mostly bad for the Germans.

= Statistics at the halfway point.

German ops: 7 + 8 + 6 + 6 = 27
Roman ops: 6 + 9 + 9 + 8 = 32

Pro-German revolts: 1 + 0 + 1 + 1 = 3
Pro-Roman revolts: 1 + 0 + 0 + 0 = 1

The Germans are by far getting the worse end of the deal when it comes to ops, though the Germans are +2 on the revolts. Unfortunately for them they were only minor revolts.

= 54 BC - Germans go first

G1 - Pictones (1). Yuck. Well, the Romans now control 12 tribes. Normally I would reinforce the Remi, but maybe it's best to let the Romans gain one tribe in order to guarantee the Massive Revolt next turn. I decide to NTA the Pictones.

R1 - Veneti (1). The Romans consider sandbagging in order to avoid the Massive Revolt next turn, but decide to go for a decisive victory. I use the card as an NTA and the Veneti join the Romans.

G2 - Sequani (2). I consider using this as a PA, but with the Veneti now in Roman control it seems the Romans are going for the throat. I activate Atrebates and Germania, sending 2 german units to Menapi, while sending Ariovistus and 1 german to Remi, while the gallic unit moves to Bellovaci territory for defense.

R2 - Tolosates (1) - The Romans activate Trans Gaul and send Caesar and 3 legions to Volcae, and force march 2 other legions to Arverni territory. Roman supply at 4 SP.

G3 - Massive Revolt! Surprise, surprise. The Biturges, Aedui, Treveri, and Sequani Revolt against the Romans. Vercingetorix and the Sequani assault Alesia, while the Treveri and Aedui come in as reserves, with 1 Treveri unit attacking the Leuci in order to cut off the escape route for the legions. Vercingetorix is able to successfully capture Alesia, slaughtering the Mandubii and the Roman legions in the process, though casualties are high (all units reduced to strength 1 or 2). The Treveri unit at Leuci takes one hit and retreats home.

One Arverni and one Sequani unit regroup home. The others remain in Mandubii territory. German VP now at 6.

R3 - Esuvii (1). Well, that changes things, eh? The Romans activate Volcae, and send Caesar and legion VIII to Boii.

G4 - Treveri (2). The Germans activate Menapi and Remi, sending the german units to in Menapi to Treveri and Ariovistus plus the Remi unit to Mandubii.

R4 - Helvetii (3). With Mandubii heavily reinforced, the Romans decide to use this for SP. Roman SP now at 8.

G5 - Aedui (2). The Germans consider raiding but decide to recapture Leuci territory instead. Six units (including Ariovistus and Vercingetorix) attack the Leuci, while the Tarbelli move to reinforce Cadurci. The Leuci manage a hit, but are crushed.

R5 - Atrebates (1). The Romans activate Boii and attack the lone Aedui unit. The Aedui are crushed by Caesar and legion VIII, who each remain in Aedui territory.

= Harvest

Poor (roll: 1)

= Units Go Home

Caesar (who does not count against the garrison limit) and legion VIII remain in Aedui territory. All other legions return home. The Leuci and Mandubii return home to join the anti-Roman coalition, while the Aedui rejoin the Romans. Vercingetorix remains at Mandubii while all other units return home.

= Tribe Area Control

The Romans are at 9 (lost Birtuges, Leuci, Treveri, Mandubii, but gained Venetii). The Germans are at 14 (gained Treveri, Leuci, Mandubii, Sequani and Pictones).

= Supply and Attrition

Romans left two legions in the field Roman SP at 6.

= Replacements

Legions VII and XI repaired for 2 SP. Roman SP now at 4.

= Production

Romans gain 4 SP. Roman SP at 8. (I think I goofed here. Should have been 3).

= Reinforcements

Legions I and XV arrive early.

= Synopsis

Great turn for the German player, since they were able to kill 2 legions, which might be just enough to win the game. The Romans, on the other hand, are rather upset. At least their reinforcements arrived early.

(I was so engrossed after the Massive Revolt that I forgot to take a picture at the end of the turn and went right into the next turn!)

= 53 BC - Romans go first

R1 - Baggage Train. Romans gain 3 SP. Roman SP now at 11.

G1 - Major Revolt! Dumnorix appears in Arverni territory and they take up arms against the Romans.

R2 - Boii (2). I activate Aedui and Trans Gaul. The Romans force march two legions into Aedui territory, while two each move into Volcae and Allobroges territory. Knowing the Gauls are weakened at Mandubii, Caesar (who had wintered) and his new Aedui allies decide to attack there. Vercingetorix is forced to retreat into Bellovaci territory, leaving the Mandubii to fend for themselves. They score one hit before being crushed.

The Romans do not regroup, instead remaining in Mandubii. Roman SP at 9.

G2 - Atrebates (1). I activate Germania. Two german units move into Sequani territory to protect the fortress there, while Ariovistus and one german unit move into Menapi territory.

R3 - Veneti (1). Caesar plus one legion attacks west into Carnutes territory. The Carnutes are easily defeated, but the Romans decide to regroup to Menapii territory, figuring they can occupy it later.

G3 - Cardurci (2). Menapi and Leuci activated. Ariovistus and 1 german unit at Menapi, plus the gallic unit at Leuci, move into Treveri territory for a future assault on Alesia.

R4 - Leuci (1). Ack. Now it's the Romans turn to draw garbage. Caesar, upon receiving intelligence of a barbarian buildup in Treveri territory, orders the two legions in Aedui territory to reinforce his position.

G4 - Andes (2). NTA. The gallic tribes of Andes take up arms against the Romans!

R5 - Menapi (1). Time to nip the buildup in the bud. I activate Mandubii, sending Caesar and three legions, plus his gallic allies, into Treveri to breakup the hordes massing there. Although no kills are scored, the german-gallic coalition is soundly defeated, forcing the units there to scatter. Ariovistus plus one german retreat to Menapi, the Leuci return home, while the Treveri are crushed. Two hits are scored on the Romans.

The Romans leave two legions as a garrison.

G5 - Britannia (2). NTA. The gallic tribes of Britain take up arms against the Romans!

= Harvest

Poor (roll: 1)

= Units Go Home

The Carnutes go home, and revert to neutral status since neither player occupied the area. The Treveri and Mandubii return home to join the Romans. The Germans all return to Germania, while Vercingetorix remains at Bellovaci.

The Romans leave one legion each in Treverii and Mandubii territory.

= Tribe Area Control

Romans 9, Germans 13.

= Supply and Attrition

The Romans pay 2 SP for the two legions left to garrison. Roman SP now at 7.

= Replacements

The Romans use 3 SP to bring all legions back to full strength. Roman SP now at 4.

= Production

The Romans get 4 SP. Roman SP now at 8.

= Reinforcements

Legions XI and XII reformed.

= Synopsis

The Germans, with two NTA's this turn, are fairly happy despite the setback at Treveri. The Romans will have to be aggressive to make up some lost ground.

= 52 BC - Germans go first

G1 - Bellovaci (3). The Germans activate the Germania, Britannia and Tarbelli areas. Two germans move into Sequani territory for defense, while Ariovistus and one german move into Menapi. The two gauls from Britannia naval move into Andes territory, while the Tarbelli reinforce Cardurci.

R1 - Arverni (2). The Romans activate Trans Gaul, force marching Caesar plus five legions into Sequani territory, while sending the other two legions into Volcae territory. With the second activation the Romans send a legion from Mandubii into Leuci.

The gallic/germanic coalition at Sequani is badly mauled, and two damaged german units retreat back into Germania, scoring only 3 hits on the legions. Meanwhile the Leuci are routed. No Romans regroup.

Roman SP at 2.

G2 - Menapi (1). The two german units that just retreated into Germania high tail it into Menapi territory to link up with Ariovistus and avoid destruction at the hands of the legions.

R2 - Treveri (2). Caesar and four legions move into Mandubii. Two Allobroges units move into Aedui territory.

G3 - Britannia (2). The Germans activate Andes and Menapi. The four gallic units (2 home units, 2 from Britannia) advance against the Veneti, while Ariovistus plus one full strength german move into Remi. The two damaged german units move into Atrebates territory.

The Veneti are easily defeated and all but one Andes unit regroup back into Andes territory.

R3 - Tarbelli (1). The Romans activate Mandbuii, and send Caesar plus four legions into Esuvii territory, who are crushed. One legion regroups to Mandubii. The rest prepare for the invasion of Britannia.

G4 - Tolosates (1). With Britannia wide open the Germans decide to activate Andes and send Britannia's gallic units back home.

R4 - Germania (3). The Romans take the opportunity to build up their supply. Roman SP at 6.

G5 - Biturges (2). The Germans activate the Cardurci and Arverni. Three gallic units from each area attack the Santones, who are conquered with little resistance.

R5 - Carnutes (1). The Romans activate Esuvii, sending Caesar plus one legion into Britannia, while sending the other two legions to attack the lone Andes unit. Both attacks are successful, but the legions take some casualties in the process.

One legion remains to garrison Britannia and Andes, while the others all regroup to Esuvii.

= Synopsis

This was a pretty good turn for the Romans, especially now that they're sitting in Britannia (worth 3 VP). Still, with the Germans sitting on 6 VP, they still need to take more territory next turn. The Germans are reeling a bit, but did manage to acquire two tribes and caused some significant damage to the Romans. They're hoping to nurse their slim lead. It's coming down to the wire.

= 51 BC - Romans go first

At this point I had it in my head that the Romans were down only 1 point (if they held Britannia) but they were actually down two. The Romans currently have 15 VP, and the Germans 17.

R1 - Treveri (2). The Romans decide on a western route, force marching the damaged Caesar unit plus three legions into Tolosates territory, leaving two legions behind at Volcae. The Allobroges are also activated, and 1 unit each is sent to Boii and Aedui for defensive purposes.

Roman SP at 1.

G1 - Tarbelli (1). The Tarbelli, hearing rumors of an approaching Roman army, seek refuge in Cardurci territory.

R2 - Germania (3). Caesar remains in Tolosates, while the other three legions are sent into the now vacant Tarbelli area. The legion at Sequani is moved into Mandubii territory. The legion already stationed at Mandubii territory, plus one gallic unit attack the Carnutes. The Carnutes take one hit, then retreat into Biturges territory to join Vercingetorix.

G2 - Leuci (1). The Germans activate the Biturges and attack the Romans and her allies at Carnutes, who are forced to retreat back to Mandubii. Vercingetorix and the Carnutes unit remain, while the Biturges regroup home.

R3 - Pictones (1). The Romans activate Tarbelli and attack with all 3 units into Santones, who are handily defeated. Two legions remain, while one regroups to Tarbelli.

G3 - Volcae (1). Ack! Stupid 1 ops! In a desperation move the Germans activate Cardurci and attack the legion at Tarbelli. The legion misses, takes two hits and retreats to Santones territory. All gallic units regroup to Cardurci.

R4 - Caruntes (1). With the legions getting thin the Romans decide to send the Andes to do their dirty work for them and attack the Veneti. The Veneti are defeated. One Andes unit remains at Veneti, but the other regroups to its home territory.

G4 - Arverni (2). Ariovistus and 3 german units attack the Treveri from Germania and Remi. The Treveri are damaged but both units manage to retreat to Leuci, both at strength 1. Ariovistus and two germans remain at Treveri, while 1 regroups to Remi.

R5 - Helvetii (3). Two legions attack the Pictones from Santones, the two Sequani units move out, 1 each to Mandubii and Leuci, and Caesar moves to Tarbelli. The Pictones are destroyed. Fearing that leaving a single legion would be too risky, the Romans regroup both legions home, hoping the Germans won't have the ops to recapture it.

Note: I should have left the legion there anyway, but didn't realize I was 2 points down, though it may have backfired.

G5 - Sequani (2). The Gauls in Carnutes and Biturges are activated. Vercingetorix and 1 gallic unit attack the Andes, while a Biturges unit occupies Pictones territory. The Andes are defeated, and Vercingetorix regroups to Carnutes territory.

= Units Go Home

The Veneti and Santones return home to join the Romans, while the Treveri, Andes and Pictones return home to join the Germans.

= Final Score

Germans 17
Romans 16

Romans hold Aedui, Allobroges, Boii, Britannia*, Esuvii, Helvetii, Leuci, Mandubii, Santones, Sequani, Tarbelli, Tolosates, Volcae, and Veneti. That's 14 tribes controlled, with Britannia counting as 3 VP.

Germans hold Andes, Arverni, Atrebates, Bellovaci, Biturges, Cardurci, Carnutes, Menapi, Pictones, Remi, and Treveri. That's 11 tribes controlled, plus 6 VP for two legions killed.

= Synopsis

Close game! I'm not sure that leaving a legion in Pictones would have won it for me. I still would have attacked it with Vercingetorix, and probably knocked them out of there anyway, so I don't feel too bad about it. The two legions killed during the Massive Revolt was just a bit too much to overcome.

The map at the end of the game (note that I accidentally flipped the Leuci unit to the wrong side):
