I’m new to the GCACW system and I’m having a little problem understanding flank attacks. Can hexes only be covered by units of the active player which are ADJACENT to the defender or can units which are one hex away from the defender also cover a hex?

In the illustration below, are hexes 3729, 3828, and 3329 covered?

Thanks for the help!!

These are covered hexes. They are in the ZOC of inactive enemy units. These enemy units needn't be adjacent to the defender.

Hi Daniel,

I'm with You with that "difficult" rule ...

At pag. 17 "Flank Attacks" (in brief): the attacking units active or inactive occuping an hex adjacent to the defender or units projecting their ZOC on hexes adjacent to the defender ... those are the two typical situations that define an hex "covered".

In the illustration all the six hexes adjacent to Davidson-A are "Covered":

3730+3930 by ZOCs of Whitacker-A;
3830 by Whitacker-A himself;
3729+3828+3929 by ZOCs of D.McCook and J.Mitchell

Fiuuuuu whistle

Good wargaming,

F.

Davidson's in a heap of trouble. Why wouldn't he Cav retreat? Looks like he had at least 3 opportunities... laugh

I'll just throw in that the units in the North need to project at least 1/4 of the combat value into an adjacent hex to have it covered.
Probably not a problem with Infantry surrounding Cavalary though.
The interesting case would be the defender at combat value 8 and both northern units at CV 1, 3729 and 3329 would not be covered, but 3828 would be, since the combined projected CV is 2.

The good thing is that Flanking is one of the few "hard to swallow" rules in this system

Sorry about Davidson (being cavalry) - I just chose counters at random to illustrate my question.
