I'm enjoining the "Lead-in/ON" as provided with through Pete Belli there: D-Day Pop Analysis for what follows then.
My own copy of this were/is the 1964 version, as I prefer such over just about another. First of all; the Spartan, or 'sparse' overall appearance befits what I consider as conveying "period feel" with theirs. THIS is what I'd attribute as some manner of 'looks more-like' what any General would be "poring over", ascertaining the location(s)/extent for their LINES, dictating 'orders' to then become issued-forth, etc. THEN, having the 'grid' being square instead of HEX-based is what you'd also expect them way-back to "do" as well.
"KEWLdos!" overall for their MAP, and I have to admit freely that THE 'hand-drawn' sort in general, are more appealing to ME at least.
ONTO them counters; and they SERVE their 'purposes', whilst even having an assortment of SIZE with them, or being unusual overall as per others from around then. "Ships"-games being the other more predominant kinds to feature the longer type with what you'll see here. I liked how these here project "linear" conformity, that is, when the whole array for this were spread around the BOARD, it gives the impression of 'formations' jockeying into position while maneuvering about so's they "come to grips" and confront one another. WHEN I have the time and get a 'roud tuit', there is a HYBRID counterset that I'd care to have created for this, and JUST: "for looks better now huh?"
Check out this fellow's and that is NICE!
I've 'carnage-strewn-scene' and 'combattled' across over much for that plenty of times, and even will once again here soonish with someone NEW to this A~L~L "to boot! YA~HOOT!" That's the greatest RE-DRAWN appeal unto these much simpler ones, as it allows someone totally unfamiliar for whatever, to then BEGIN on discovering this, as you also RE-Discover simplicity through their oncoming experiences, and it ought to "B" FUN! or what's the POINT eh? Whilst 'moi' shall 'envision' other manners in which to utilize such if ONLY their "Map" some more for anything, as: "it's a beauty!"

I bought extra sets of the G-Burg 99 counters with the flag symbols and put them in with my earlier editions which I felt looked super like your pic's show..
I used to just lay that map out on the floor and just look at it-To me it looked like a good period feel map.
