Great game! Played it again last night and had an odd thing happen. We ran out of Captain pieces. Went to the rules booklet and found that the rules state that the equipment pieces are unlimited but did not suggest that for the Captains, Soldiers, or Merchants.

Does that mean there is a limit to the number of Captains (24 come with the game) and when the 24th Captain is played there are no more?

This is of no help whatsoever, but could I point out that Captain Usage sounds a lot like a fictional character who is used to sell kitchen cleaners?

Given the precise wording in the rules, I'd agree that they are limited.

Seems like a lot of captains in play, did you set the year timer to the proper amount for your game? (2 laps for 4 players, etc?)

Hi Steve,

Thank you for your input. Yes, we set the year correctly, 3 players. One of my contracts was to recieve 3 points for every Officer on the ship (besides the Captain) and I acquired the token that allowed me to get a Captain every time I took a person from the green rundel. I also had the contract that gave me 32 victory points for building 6 ships. So, I was a ship/captain generator for the entire game (also had the building piece that allowed me to house a person without the sleeping campartment - up to two).

We were not sure of the rules so I was allowed to use two people (turned upside down) to substitute for captains for my last ship...

If what you suggest is true (and I sadly agree with you cry) means I have to turn the victory over to the host...shake, cry

Okay, this calls for another voyage angry

Thank you for the quick response!

While your literal reading of the rules looks valid. This seems odd.

Once the captains are all gone there would be not much point in continuing to play -- no one would be able to sail any more ships than the captains they had already managed to stockpile.

I'm all for literal readings of rules... this just seems strange that equipment would be limited but employees not.

Geoffrey,

My thoughts too.

Maybe the designer can lend a helping hand with the definitive answer. If it is true, then there is another strategy that could be utilized in the game. If not...I win !

Thank you for your thougths!

Captains are crew, not employees.

I think it's just an oversight in the rules not to mention that crew are unlimited. But it's hard to know for sure.

Hi David,

Thank you for your feedback. I just sent an email to Jay T (Rio Grande Games) to see if he knows the answer. I could not find an email address for Vladimir so I thought Jay might know.

Thanks to everyone for providing your thoughts and inputs to this question; this is why I like BGG so much, the people that use it are so nice and have a multi-perspective view that is accepted by all.

You are all fantastic; thanks!!!

If you do hear anything from either Jay or CGE I'd definitely be quite curious to hear about it here!

Thanks for the question. They are unlimited. We just forgot to mention it in rules.
