This night we had another tabletop. But for the first time we were making our characters from scratch. We are really going back to the beginning where we do not have a couple of dozen boxes to tick but only 6 initially.

For this we started with me as Ariana, an elf with lawful good alignment and Salem, a magician with chaotic good alignment. I had 100 gold to spend and Robert had 90 to spend. After acquiring a dagger, a sword, protecting armour, food, torches, a lantern, rope, a shield and a backpack and some more items Ariana was ready. As magician Salem only could buy a dagger (silver one, pretty!) and a backpack, torches, rope, oil, wine and a holy symbol.

We set forth. Our mission was to go out to the hills and find Bardel in one of the caves. He had been murdering and robbing. There were treasures to be found in those hills. At the entrance of the cavern we lit the lantern. There was a small corridor going in. A small goblin with grey skin appeared. He shreaks, takes his sword and attacks without any hesitation. He misses though. Ariana strikes back with her sword . The goblin drops down, but is not dead yet. Salem uses his dagger and slices his throat. It might have been nice to at least first put the dagger against his throat while trying to receive some information, but no. Too late for that already. The goblin is dead. Our treasure, 13 peaces of copper coins.

The corridor goes further in only one direction, so we continue. We enter a kind of room. From the left we hear hissing. It is a snake of about 3 meters long. It sits on a large pile of coins. It doesn't move or attack, so Ariana approaches with shield up and tries to move the snake with the tip of her sword. The snake attacks the sword. I try to cut it's head off but fail. Salem also attacks and fails. The snake now attacks Salem (d20 - 20). 3 Hit points for Salem, ouch. Ariana tries another time and succeeds this time. The loot is considerable, even a pearl, some electrum, gold and platina.

We still haven't found Bardel yet so we continue. The corridor moves on. Suddenly we hear a voice talking around the corner. We make sure the ligth from the lantern is obscured and Ariana peeks around the corner. There is a woman sitting there with a large weapon (like a stick with an round object on top) next to her. It looks like she is praying. Ariana let's Salem approach her first. He greets her. She is Aliena, a priestess. She notices Salem is hurt and tells him she can heal him. After some deliberation (Ariana doesn't trust Aliena yet, could be a doppelganger or who knows!) Salem decides to trust Aliena. She touches him and we see his wounds healing.

Aliena was exploring the cave as well, but stopped at that point to pray to Pelor. Ariana still doesn't trust her. Praying in a dark cave to the god of the sun? But they do continue as a group, Aliena up front. Ariana doesn't want her back to her. The corridor splits to the right. We go to the right and come across 4 beastlike beings who are standing still, waiting for victims to pass. They are ghouls, undead. Aliena gets us a few feet back so the ghouls cannot hear us. She thinks she can defeat the ghouls, but is unsure because of how many there are of them. She approaches the ghouls with her holy symbol of the sun and throws a spell on the ghouls to be gone. Indeed, they flee. But the spell won't last long so we have to hurry. We retreat to the splitting of the corridors and get back on the first track.

After a few meters there is a door in the right wall. (A door in a cave??). There is no sound to be heard inside. Whatever we try, we do not get this door open. Instead of staying here we continue through the corridor. The corridor turns left and there is a moving light coming from that direction. Again, Ariana peeks around the corner. There is a man in a black cloth there, with a robe on, with a beard and some books. Aliena says this is Bardel, this is the man we are looking for.

Ariana tries to cast her sleeping spell. She fails to do so. Bardel notices the group and mumbles several words. He disappears! No, he is not gone. We hear footsteps. He made himself invisible. Aliena attacks, she manages to hit Bardel. He re-appears with a head wound. Ariana attacks with her sword but fails. Salem attacks too and misses as well. Bardel throws a spell. Salem isn't able to defend himself from the spell and falls asleep because of the spell. Aliena and Ariana are still awake. Bardel tries to run away. Aliena attacks again and slightly hits him. Bardel still continues to get further away. Now Ariana attacks and she brings him down, he is dead. Taking the sorcery book, a bottle and a bag from black velvet filled with jewels we are victorious. Aliena returns to her monastery. Ariana wakes Salem and they return to the village where they are received as heroes.

Cool stuff! This is the adventure presented in the Players Manual of the Dungeons & Dragons Set 1: Basic Rules. There, it's a solo adventure using numbered sections (included as a way to experience playing the game for the first time and to give you a taste of how the rules work). There are a few minor changes, but the bulk of the story is the same. Ah... sweet, sweet nostalgia.
