Mounted boards are great and all, but sometimes for war games you just want something that folds down nicely like a map. Does anyone know where you can get "maps" printed like this? Walgreens offers poster printing, but it turns out it's on photo paper, not poster paper, so it doesn't really fold. Any ideas are appreciated.

Artscow sells prints on canvas. I believe the unstretched ones are just a piece of canvas.

Fedex Office (the store formerly known as Kinkos) has plotters that geologists and whatnot actually use to print real maps. They're the giant printers in the back. I'm not sure how to use them, but I've seen them used before. I'm sure someone there could show you how.

Thanks Chris. I knew Fedex had those plotters, not sure why I didn't think to try them... I'll have to swing down there tomorrow and see what kinds of paper they have.

If there's a college to the resources of which you have access, they often have plotters, as well.

Kinkos will print on the plastic canvas used for outdoor sign advertisings but they are limited in size to something like 3'x4' or 4'x6'. There are outdoor sign companies which will print them out for a surprizing reasonable price. My full color Flat Top map with 2" hexes is about 8'x12' and cost around $350.

I had 30x36" maps printed in black and white, on regular paper, quite cheaply at Kinko's. Mine didn't require much color, so I colored them in by hand. Color prints at that size are much more expensive.

Most office supply stores such as Office Max, also offer printing on large format plotters.

I guess I was mostly concerned about the paper. Maps are generally a sort of semi-gloss finish that has a decent weight to it (and stands up to repeated folding and unfolding). When I picture these plotters at OfficeMax and Kinkos, I'm picturing plain white 24lb paper for some reason. I'll be able to find out in the morning if they offer any other types of paper. Thanks.

Ohh, hmm.. In that case, I'm not so sure then! Hopefully they can point you in the right direction then if they don't have that paper.

The one near me uses something near 100#. I recommend against the gloss paper. It cracks when folded and smears with damp (the natural moisture of your fingertips is enough).

Artscow has a 20" by 30" pillowcase ($11.99, with frequent 2 for $12 deals) which I used to print the The Legend of Robin Hood board. They also have a 66" by 72" shower curtain ($39.99) which you could print lots of stuff on and cut out afterward. There is also www.fabricondemand.com which prints on fabric, though I don't know their pricing. Fabric folds even better than paper!

Try calling Pittmon Maps http://pittmonmaps.com/mainpage.html They're a little spendy ($15/sq foot), and I don't know if they'll do custom images, but they might have some ideas for who to contact for printing.

Other than that, your best bet is probably to look up a local printer, call them, & ask for a quote on what you want.

Also, remember that you can roll poster paper & store it in a tube. Not as convenient, but also no wrinkles & creases. Combine it with a sheet of heavy vinyl & it'll lay flat as a board, not shift, and look great!

I went by Fedex Print today. Large format B&W is cheap, but they don't offer any paper choices, it's pretty much regular weight copier paper. I don't think it would stand up well to repeated use. The color large format printer (which gets ridiculously expensive pretty quick) has more paper choices, but still nothing quite what I was looking for. The thinnest was 45 lb, which felt a little more like card stock... but might be worth a test printing of something relatively small, like a Valor & Victory map.

What I'm really hoping to find is something about the same weight and feel as the old Ogre maps. Literally something I can fold down like a glove compartment map. Obviously there's somewhere out there that prints on this sort of paper... It's just a matter of finding them and hoping they have reasonable prices when I do.

Thanks for all the other input for canvas/cloth/pillow cases. While I was at FedEx I did go ahead and order a 1'x 1' canvas print for another project, but I'm really looking for paper for this particular PnP.

I had kinkos print me a map in black and with for African Rails, then I colored it by hand and had them laminate it.

Search for Reprographics companies in your city.

They print large format documents for architects and construction projects. Most good ones do color, and all good ones are very concerned with quality.

Good ones can also print on a variety of materials.

Spoonflower prints on a number of kinds of fabric. Probably better and cheaper because no shipping from asia and is focused on quality printing on fabric
