Anything specific does the Ronin token do? I don't see where it mentions in the rulebook. Or do ship, samurai and ronin share the exact function?

Ronin are special because not only are they "fast tokens" or "fast tiles", but they're the only fast tokens in the game that go on ground spaces. Ships are also fast tokens, but they can only go on water spaces.

"Fast" means you can play any number of them (they're denoted with a "kanji" or japanese word on the token itself), unlike slow or normal tiles like the Samurai or 3-strength buddha tokens which you can only play 1 per turn.

So you can place any number of Ships to give you an upper hand for most influence, and then close off a village/city/town to gain the figure(s) before your opponent(s) have time to retaliate and counter. Ronin, being a fast land tile allows you to snatch away figures that otherwise would've gone to your opponent(s) for yourself, even if such a village requires 2 more land spaces to close.

The ship, samurai and ronin are all wilds and count for each type of piece. Obviously the ships are played on water spaces. After playing the ships and ronin you may play another tile. After playing a samurai you do not get to play another tile.

Unless you play a ship, a ronin or a figure swap tile after playing that samurai.
There are no restrictions in the rules about when you play the tiles with the kanji - before or after (or instead!) a normal tile.
