Do you always take as many cards as necessary to end your turn with 5 cards in your hand?

For example, if you play an action card that lets you play additional action cards, or if a player forces you to discard a card from your hand?

NO.

You only get to draw ONE (1) new Action at the end of each turn, unless some other Action Card or Noble effect affects this amount.

For instance Political Influence lets you draw 3 additional action cards instead of collecting a noble this turn, so you'd get to pick up 4 cards in total that turn.

There is no minimum nor maximum hand size for action cards. You can hoard them if there's none worth playing on a particular turn, or you can usually string a maximum of 2 together by playing that card you referred to ("Trip", which lets you shift a noble one position backward and then play an additional action card. It's one of my favorites).

Edit (I was wrong on this part): Also note that 5 Action cards is the starting hand for 2-Player Mode. If you have 3 players, you only start with 4. 4 Players and you start with 3... Have fun!

There's a card that lets you exchange your hand of aciton cards with those of someone else's, so at the very least, you'll want to be wary of that.

Is this a new rule in later editions? The one I played about 4 years back or so stated that everyone starts off with 5 cards.

I bought a version back last year (2010), but one of my friends lost my Rule Book. The people who introduced me to the game always played with varying starting hand sizes, but I just checked the online scan version available in the Files section and it says 5 Action Cards to all players without specifying any variance.

I'll see if I can find a replacement online and get back to you on that one.
My mistake, but thanks for the correction - methinks I've been conned into an easier game these past few months!
