Has anyone figured a good way to utilize all the very oddly-shaped compartments in the insert in a way that makes sense overall? Other than the hex-shaped area (which is presumably to hold the forest tiles), nothing else seems to be a shape that matches the components.

Indeed. The wells are shaped to look like a moai and its headdress. I decided to put - not surprisingly - the moai and headdresses there.

It's funny that you except the (double-)hex-shaped area, because it's the one that is completely useless: the two spaces are too close for the forest tiles to fit if you use both, and they are too shallow to use only one.

The proper place for the dice is not hard to find, and the assembled receptacle fits in the square well (I put it upside down and store some stuff under it). The quarries go in the shallow depression in one corner, covering the deeper well.
