With so many rule sets, I am trying to find the most realistic without upsetting the scenario designs. Help!

Poll
My son is starting to take an interest in Battle Cry. I am trying to figure out what rules to use. What rules come closest to what you use? Please give reasons and/or additional house rules below. Thanks!
Which rules do you now use with the original BC game?
Original
Advanced Battle Cry v3.0 (scribidinus/Walnut Creek Game Society)
Rule Modifications given in Peninsula/7Days Campaign (James Megee)
Rules Adaptation for playing BC:150 Rules with Original Game on CSW

If you are playing the original game with original scenarios, why not just use the original rules?

Not to sound snarky, but if he wants to play Battle Cry...use the Battle Cry rules.

If you want something more "realistic", go for a different game. The argument of how the "Command and Colors" series is not realistic gets thrown up quite often. I love the game and systems the way they are, personally (with a very small exception ).

One reason would be that I want a more realistic game that still plays in under an hour. But realism may not really what I was looking for. You guys play with absolutely no mods?

Nope. I play the original game with the original rules and the revised game with the revised rules. I am very anti-house rules, no offense to those that make them.

By the book too. Sure saves a lot of fuss when you play other people who play by the book also

Actually, this makes me feel better. I tend to dislike house rules too with few exceptions. It is absolutely true that it makes out hard to play others. About the only exception I make is for drawing a tile at the end of a turn in Carc.

We will play by the book.

I play the original BC and BC:150 with one house rule that some call 'The Saber Rule.' Which is that Sabers rolled in battle only hit at a range of 1 hex. This is a staple rule in C&C:Napoleonics.

The fact that the original rules are still used is great! After reading about how the game is unrealistic I got interested in more complex variants which extended game duration and hence my desire to play the game at all!!! Thus this post makes me want to rediscover the game in its original form.

Thanks for this post

You can always start with the original rules and when your son gets the hang of it, suggest to add some house rules.

This is probably a good idea. It seems strange to me that the difference between infantry fire and artillery is only one hex, and that's probably my biggest issue. However, that certainly isn't a reason to just abandon the original rules.

Thought I do like to tinker, I fall back to the Original rules of whichever game I have on the table, when playing face to face games.
In both cases I use the same house rule as BradyS.

I haven't done it yet, but if I were to play with any house rule for this game, it would be the Saber Rule.
