This card has "Spoils(Village)" Am I right in assuming that, after a dungeon victory, I add up the gold total on my revealed hand and use that to buy a card?
Can I buy any of the 16 cards in the village, providing I have the right amount of gold?

I believe you select a card from the village. We don't play with any consideration to gold values. Are we wrong?

Yes, you are. You do need to be able to pay for the card you end up purchasing.

Heroes are not village cards. Otherwise, correct. You can buy any of the 12 village cards that you can afford.

To the best of my knowledge - I haven't read the most recent rulebook, but I doubt it has changed on this issue - yes.
If a card says something like Spoils (Food), then you can only buy food village cards. So on and so forth for cards that say (weapon) and the like. Undoubtedly you must be able to pay the cost.

... In fact, I just looked it up: http://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/52284/thunderstone-rules-v...
The passage is under Resolving Battles on page 12.

- Hope this helps!

1.4 rules:

"Chalice Paladin: You may purchase any one Village
card (including Basic and Hero cards) from the Village
after a victorious battle, using the gold in your hand." (p. 20)
