Hello everyone,
i've encountered the following situation:
During the Upkeep Phase i want to exchange one sanity for a power token using my soul pact. I also have an ally (Ammi Pierce) who prevents the loss of one sanity per turn.
Can i use his ability to receive one free power token?
Thanks in advance, Artyom

Thanks in advance, Artyom Absolutely! The reason being that the various mechanisms in the game that prevent loss of a resource do not protect against you spending a resource. Here you are spending sanity to gain something so there is no protection.
This is analogous to Harvey Walters's "Strong Mind" ability: Harvey reduces all Sanity losses he suffers by 1, to a minimum of 0. This abiltiy affects such things as fail Horror Checks, it does not work when he casts spells and therefore incurs a Sanity cost.

Actually the soul pact card says:
Upkeep: Exhaust Soul Pact and lose X Sanity to gain X Power.
The key word here is "lose" like after a failed horror check. That's why i believe i can reduce one sanity loss and gain one power token for free (exhausting my ally, of course).

That's why i believe i can reduce one sanity loss and gain one power token for free (exhausting my ally, of course). Hmmmm... but if you don't lose the Sanity, how can you gain the Power? The Pact is you giving up something to the Lurker in exchange for Power, it represents your descent into insanity as you delve deeper into the mysteries of the Mythos. So while I agree with your semantics, I believe that this is not within the spirit of the game - I'd class it as gaming the system. We know that there are some (presumably unintentionally) exploitable elements of Lurker that need fixing and maybe this is one of those.
Ultimately, it sounds as though you've already decided how you want to go and are just looking to us to justify your decision. So play it how you want, you don't need our sanction - it's your game, enjoy it how you will.

No, actually i stopped playing my solitaire game and waited for the opinions. Isn't it the whole point of this game rule forum?
And I think you made a good point. Still i think that having psychological resistance allows you to gain small amounts of power for free. After all i already gave a part of my soul by accepting the soul pact, risking to be devoured for eternity.
I think i'll go for the free power token in exchange for exhausting my ally after all.

No, actually i stopped playing my solitaire game and waited for the opinions. Isn't it the whole point of this game rule forum? Absolutely! which is why I both contribute to and receive from the forum. I'm not sure that I'd halt a game though, I'd play it as best as I could figure and then double-check with the forum. IMO it's not worth holding up a game for (though it's slightly different if you're soloing, I accept)

Well, when all said and done, all I can do is offer my opinion; if you understand my viewpoint that's great, but if you don't want to agree with me that's great too! At least we've both had the chance to think things through and clarify our thinking! I take no offense from you going your way and meant none by my comment; it sounded as though you'd thought it through having read my response and decided that your interpretation worked for you - and I'm totally cool with that.
Have fun!

OK, i've got an update, if someone cares about official Q&A:
http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_foros_discusion.asp?e...
Quote: 3. When you are losing Stamina or Sanity to gain power, using the Upkeep function of a Blood or Soul pact, is it a cost or a loss? As in, can Harvey Walters gain 2 power by losing 1 Sanity with a Soul Pact? The wording on the pact card does say "lose."
It is a loss. Harvey Walter's Strong Mind ability does apply.
Best regards, Artyom
