Here is an interesting one... the card in question is "Escape!" The text reads as such: "Randomly choose 2 nobles in line and discard them. Randomly rearrange the remaining nobles in line." Clearly, if there are only 2 nobles in line, those 2 would be discarded and the day would end. My question is: Would I still be able to collect the first noble of the next day?

The order of play, as per the rules is:
Play an action card (optional)
Collect the first noble in line.
Draw an action card.

The rules also say, "[after a day ends] The player to the left of the person who started the previous day is the first player for the new day."

Either way, I would argue that by playing escape, to complete my turn, I would get the first noble of the following day (as long as I don't play this on the 3rd day).

Thoughts?

Here's how we play it:

The day ends.
You don't collect a noble as there is not a noble in line.
The next day starts.
If the person to your right started the prior day, then you start this day.
If that was the case, you'd then play another card and THEN collect a noble.
If anyone else had started the prior day, you'd end the current day with escape and that would be it.

Anything else seems to be a real stretch of the rules.

What manowar said.

If you discard all the nobles, then you don't get a noble and your turn ends.

Once your turn has ended, the day ends and the next day begins.

The new start player begins the next day. If this is you, it is a new turn.

I can see your points, but nowhere does it say your turn ends when the day ends. My rules say this:

"Play continues in this manner until there are no nobles left in like at the start of someone's turn. That day is then over and a new day begins. Deal out 12 new noble cards from the noble deck."

I still contest my turn has not finished until I take a noble. The day ending does not signify the end of my turn.

A rare case, I could be wrong, but I am firm in my interpretation.

Yep that was 12 Power Grid maps back to back over two days. Worth doing, but possibly not in such a concentrated burst.

Ooh yes, now a little to the left - my nose is itchy. No, no the other left! Now what colour is 12 supporter badge going to be I wonder?

Do the rules say that when day three ends that the game ends or your turn ends?

Up front I agree with the other posters, if you empty the line before your pick of a noble you have missed out. Making your example to occur on day three just emphasises the point. According to your interpretation you would lay out the cards for a hypothetical day four and take the first noble and then finish the game because day three has ended

Realistically I don't think you would, thus you shouldn't have a different interpretation of the same rule for different days.

You are certainly welcome to play it anyway you want to, but I think you are reading way to much into the rules. When there are no nobles in line, you simply don't get one. That's it.

Discarding a Grey noble is a valid tactic to keep yourself from getting negative points and when you discard a grey noble at the end of a day, you don't get to keep playing and grab the first noble of the new day. Same situation, but you can see how ridiculous it would be in that case.

If that were possible, there would be a rule to say "If there are no nobles left in line at the end of your turn, start the new day and take the first noble in line without playing an action card."

Again, you'd have a situation where there is an exception to the basic simple rule of how to start the new day with the player to the left of whoever started it on the previous day. It just doesn't make sense to do that - which is why there is no rule to allow that.

I agree with Manowar, if you destroy the remaining nobles in line, that's it for your turn since there's nothing left to collect.

I've used Escape many a time to get out of eating 2 Gray nobles when they're the only scraps left. Makes for a great "Up Yours!" card when your opponent thought they'd pigeon-holed you into eating a negative...devil

I can't believe I never read the rules closely enough to notice that the player to the LEFT of the previous person to start the day, gets to start the next day... That could have come in handy on several occasions in past games... Must try to memorize these rules!modest

You say it right here. Play Continues until the start of someone's turn where there are no nobles. Then at the start of that persons turn they deal out 12 cards. It clearly states that the nobles are dealt out by a new player.

So, you you run out of nobles, there will be no nobles for you to collect. The next person will have to 'start' their turn. And seeing that there are no nobles left, the day will end. Then the new day starts with the person to the left of who started the last day.

Twice there is talk about start of turn for 'new' players. No where does it say '... and the current player continues play...'

Fair enough. It seems I am in the wrong. Thank you for giving me your thoughts and considering my interpretation.

Recently acquired this game and love it. When the card states "randomly" twice, my daughter(the masterful strategist) interprets that to mean you cannot view who is being removed from the line and you cannot view the nobles as you line them up again. I think that's not what the creator intended. I believe it's a great action card that lets you select any 2 nobles, discard them, replace the remaining nobles back into a line in any order you choose. Can someone tell us the correct play for this card? I'm pretty sure I have it right, but would appreciate anyone weighing in on this. Thanks all lovers of Guillotine!

Pick up the nobles, shuffle them (face down for you masterful strategist's benefit), discard two. The place the remaining nobles face up in the line.
