Hi all, I'm checking out for a war-game that is low-medium complexity, doesn't take too long and one that doesn't cost much. Oh and solo playable. So far seems like either the Allied Assault or the Russian Assault is my best bet. RA's got a game weight of 2.7, but is it really that much more complicated than the AA of 2.4? Thanks

No,

They are pretty much exactly the same. Russian assault is a little more 'polished' as it features a few tweaks to the rules but they are pretty small.

Go for whichever one is the more interesting to you: East/West front... Or which you can get at the better price.

Oh, Russuan Assault does come with a stack of little plastic tanks and such though they serve no game function at all!

I'm actually more interested in Russian Assault as reviewers claim it as the better game, but man, it costs almost double the base game.

Yes, the rules have been improved a little but many of these new rules can be used in the Allied game.

this review sums it up well (and with some style!):

and as he says:

Let's say you're looking for a game that acts like a video game trying to be a board game, and you want it to be all about World War II. Well, you're in luck. This game has your name on it. If you're trying to decide between Allied Assault and Russian Assault, get Russian Assault first. It's got more stuff in the box.

which i would agree with (depending on cost...)

- They are VERY similar... and i guess it depends how much of a premium you are willing to shell out to see T34s rolling across frozen lakes rather than Shermans firing from a grassy hill....

You can get RA directly from Petroglyph website for $29.99 US. Unfortunately, the shipping is only free to US addresses. I am not sure what they would charge for shipping to Vancouver.

-Are you serious? 80 miniatures that serve no purpose? That's extra ?bucks we could have saved!
-How balanced is the game? Since war games normally reflect historical facts/events, does it favor one side more than the other?
-If I get RA, is AA is still worth getting as well?

Hi,

the mini's simply sit on top of the cards so that it is 'easier' for you to see at a glance what type of units they are... however they are pretty small and don't do much other than get in the way!

the games come with about a dozen differnt scenarios in each and the balance will vary between them all. most have seemed pretty well balanced to me, however their link to history is sometimes somewhat weak.

If you get RA then i wouldn't say there is much point in picking up the older title as well. (unless you play the Russian one to death and want to try the American units out).

Cheers

Something to keep in mind in regards to the difference between the games...is that the units and action cards have been changed to give the player more options. Action cards almost always give you two choices. Unit cards also have more abilities and specials. Russian Assault is the better game because it benefited from the gamers feedback on this site.
