Yinsh is a new acquisition, and has been an immediate success with my wife.

We've played 4 full games only so far. In our last game we realised that building out of a corner can lead to markers (which we call 'dots') that can't be converted, which might provide a strong base to build around.

This morning over breakfast we played a 'blitz' game - first to connect 5 dots wins. We each concentrated 3 rings in adjacent corners, with 2 rings near the opponent's corner. As white I moved first. The corner start seemed strong for me, but necessitated not moving some of my rings to prevent black from flipping my dots which would then be impossible to re-convert.

Defensive play was quickly forced from my wife, but soon the board took this form:

White to play and win in 2 moves

The starting formation likely has a large impact on the game, though it's not obvious to us at this time what are strong or weak set-ups. I'm sure that the corner start will be used in the upcoming games. It seems a reasonable opening gambit, though I’m concerned that a player may be effectively corralled in a corner, forced to remain static or irreversibly convert his own dots to escape. This may not pay off in a full game.

This is something that we look forward to exploring!

Nice session report!

If this is your first game in the GIPF series you're in for a ride! MAke sure to check out the other games as well. DVONN, TZAAR and ZÈRTZ are my favorites.

Thanks Björn.

This is the first of the series we've tried, though undoubtedly we'll pick up another soon. Maybe Zertz - the shrinking board intrigues me. Though I'm sure we've plenty to learn about Yinsh first!

Yinsh is one of the best 2 player tactic game I´ve ever played and (in my opinion) the best of the Gipf series.
Yes there is still a lot to learn and experience in Yinsh. Have fun.
We, too, discovered the starting points in the corners very soon. I usually place at least 2 rings in the corners and a third one to form a triangle with the first 2. At least one of the remaining rings should be placed somewhere your opponent setups his rings to mess up his plans.

Have fun!

Nice report. For me this game gets better and better with more plays.

Hope you got a bunch of plays under your belt by now.

Interesting that you used the term "win" in your puzzle as the chess term. So, removing the 3rd ring would be mate?

The entire Gipf series could benefit from strategy analysis like this. This is just the start, I hope. Thanks for the post!
