Announcing the new custom variant deck for Pandemic! Morbidity!

The Morbidity Challenge

Artscow Multipurpose Deck with back art for Player Deck, Morbidity Deck, Roles, and Missions: http://www.artscow.com/gallery/card/pandemic-morbidity-d2c3b...

This expansion includes 2 small additional decks (Missions, and Morbidity), both kept apart from the other decks in the game (Player Deck, Infection Deck).

When players use and discard some of the "good" cards from the Player Deck, they inch closer to having to draw from the Morbidity Deck. This usually puts the players in an even more dire situation where they must perform certain action to avoid more catastrophes.

Morbidity Discard Marker

This card is off to the side of the board. Whenever players discard Epidemics, Specialists, or Wild Actions, they are placed on this card. When there are 3 cards on this marker, you follow its instructions. Any combination of the cards means the players must draw the top card of the Morbidity Deck. This is usually bad news. However, if there are 3 Epidemics on the marker (and no Wild Actions or Specialists), then the discard pile resets. Players have a little control over whether or not they must draw from the Morbidity Deck (but not much).
- 1 card

Morbidity Cards

A separate deck of Morbidity Cards is kept. See above for when to draw. Each card has some action that must (or can) be performed, and a consequence. Sometimes the consequence is activated when the action is performed, and sometimes it is activated until the action is performed.
- 13 cards

Mission Cards

A separate deck of Mission Cards is kept. At the start of the game, each player draws one Mission Card. It does not count as part of your hand. If you complete the Mission, you gain the Reward listed on the card.
- 12 cards

Specialists

These cards are shuffled into the Player Deck. They count as part of your hand if you draw one. At the start of your turn, you may use a Specialist card in your hand. Doing so does not cost an action. The Specialist role then replaces your role (and ability) for that turn. Afterward, discard the Specialist to the Morbidity Discard.
- 8 cards

Wild Action Cards

This is a card that may be used in one of 2 ways. You can either play it to give yourself an additional action on YOUR turn, or you may use the card as a 5th City card for discovering a cure. Using the card does not cost an action, but if you use the card, it is discarded to the Morbidity Discard.
- 4 cards (recommended)

Escalation Cards

There is one Escalation for each of the four disease colors. These cards are in the Player Deck, and when a player draws one he or she must decide which action to take.
- 4 cards

Epidemic Cards

These are normal Epidemics, but they have been marked with "Add this card to the Morbidity Discard" to help remind players what to do with them when drawn.
- 5 cards (recommended)

Alternate Roles

Included in this variant is a replacement set of the 5 base set roles. These are specifically designed to be used with the Morbidity Challenge.
- 5 cards

Here is a link to my artscow album for this expansion... feel free to add in however many wild actions, epidemics, roles (or not) that you like. Technically, you should use the Multipurpose Deck and include the Role back art for the roles, but the 54 design deck is cheaper to get (especially with their coupon offers). Of course, there's the variant where alternate versions of roles can be shuffled into the player deck, and when you draw one, that player has the option to immediately switch to his alternate role (even if someone else draws the card). I have more alternate roles in Pandemic: End Day.

Newcomers may not be familiar with these. So here are the links to all the previous expansions by Jack Reda:

Maybe someone will post a link to a deck soon. The link above is for pictures. I'm sure there is a way to make those pictures into a deck but I'm afraid I'll mess it up if I try.

I've got the other 3 expansions decks and they are awesome... can't wait to get this one as well.

thanks again Jack!

Yes, the gallery above is missing the appropriate card back. It would be great to get a pointer to an Artscow design similar to the previous decks. (E.g., I'm not sure what zoom settings to use.)

Looks interesting. One question:
the modify scientist power, why does she/he needs a fifth card to find a cure?

Yeah, that should read 4th card. There's always something. Fixed now.

Here's a link to one of the End Day albums (with the Role card back art): http://www.artscow.com/ShareAlbum.aspx?Key=fbcnftab

If you are logged into artscow and view a gallery, it should then appear as one of your galleries for creating your own deck (at least that's been my experience when I view other peoples' galleries).

Thanks! Do you have a pointer to a blue player card back as well? Seems like most of the cards need that.

There's one in the Threat Level Six album for sure (and possibly one in one of the End Day albums- though I may have just used the TL6 art).

Mine arrived today (well, yesterday, but I didn't pick it up until today). Looks great! Can't wait to try them out.

Any plans for a PDF PocketMod rules file for this like you've done for the other expansions you've made?

Whenever you become anxious or stressed, outer purpose has taken over, and you have lost sight of your inner purpose. Your state of consciousness is primary. All else is secondary.

I just received my Morbidity deck. I like the mission and specialist cards. The morbidity deck looks nasty.

I too look forward to the rules file. Your Pandemic expansions are interesting and enjoyable, Mr. Warp.

I also got mine just yesterday and want to echo the thanks. Its probably hard work to come up with a marketable 2nd expansion with you hard at work :)

Looking forward to the rules.

Rules are now up here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/69567/pandemic-morbidi...

I have no doubt Matt Leacock and Tom Lehmann have a treasure trove of great ideas ready to launch on the next Pandemic expansion. I have a few other ideas noodling around in my brain, but I am waiting to see what goodies the new official expansion add in for me to riff on.

you can get all but the morbidity deck from artscow. There are links in the Pandemic forum under "variants".
Arts cow has card deck sales every so often so I would wait for one of those.
Prices range between $5.99 a deck shipped to $8.99.

These are GREAT fan expansions and well worth the $$ if you are a big fan of Pandemic.
The Warp does amazing work!

Thanks for this cool expansion. I like the Specialists and Mission Cards a lot. One question on the missions:
Some rewards seem to be permanent and others one use only. I'm not sure with these cards however:

"Visit 3 Research Stations in different coloured cities..."
Reward: "Draw 4 cards from the player deck instead of 2..."
- Is this permanent or just for the next draw phase?

"Choose 1 city card from the Infection discard pile and make sure that it never outbreaks..."
Reward: "Remove that city card and any adjacent city cards from the infection discard from the game..."
- The cards removed from the discard at the time the cure is found. So what happens if the cards are currently in the draw pile? Are they also removed when drawn later?

Thanks for your help!
