Need to brush up on the game. How would it work?

I own both and have never played. That is why I try to jump on these things when they come up - so I can put my collection to use.
I pulled the game out this weekend and read through all the rules again. It is a fairly simple game to grasp. Establish cities to gain tax cards. Establish Caravans to gain commodities. Use that to build stuff, including military units to take that away from others. Build enough wonders/heroes, win the game.
There is no hidden info (except with a one or two of the cards) so we could play it without a moderator and have no need for any card randomizer. If we didn't want to use a platform like vassal, we could easily do dice rolls here.

I might be interested too, as I own this but haven't played it yet. Let me know once the details are sorted out.
I'm also curious about the differences between the original version and the rules fixes that came along with the expansion. Which would we use?

I think consensus is that the expansion is best regardless. Rebalances Rome, which I think was the runaway leader in the base game being in a corner and having a strong military. If we go with 6 players, we need the expansion anyway.

Ahhh, okay, got it. As I only have the base game, I was curious how to go about applying the fixed rules without the expansion, but that won't work for 6. I would still be interested in play by email either way.

Initial set up changes a bit. Most of the Nation specific heroes changed. Quite a few no heroes. Added a 13th commodity. Added the mythical creature as a ground unit. Added the Gods phase and the High Priest role. But basic rules remain the same.

I'd say we should use the updated rules that are up here somewhere.
It suggest balancing rule changes to the basegame and we can just use which ever change we want (I guess if we''d be 6 we should just use what ever correspond to the expansion rules.)

2 Brain
i find one difficult moment to play without a moderator - trading. we have to decide what cards to trade, NOT depending on what other players decide. (sorry for my english, it was a very difficult sentence)) so i think we will have to tell one moderator our decisions, and then - after he gets information from all players - he tells it via declares it via forum.
2 others i`m afraid it would be difficult and weird to play via email or via forum NOT played in real before... otherwise, i think we should look for some extra rules, to make the game faster and more simple. or it seems to be very very long))
