Any time a monster would move to Uptown, put the monster on the card. If there are monsters equal to the number of players plus one, return the monsters to the cup and the investigators are devoured.
Abhoth was the Ancient One and the Rumour caused a monster surge, the Rumour also having crescent/plus dimensional symbols.
I placed the Child of Abhoth on the card, but when the Rumour was defeated put the Child on Uptown with Roland, who is the investigator who defeated it, since Children are Spawn monsters and do not return to the cup.
Correct? I considered just moving the Child to Uptown, but it is a monster that moved into that area, so I put it on the card. The deciding factor for me was that if the Rumour fails, the investigators are devoured and the game is over, so returning to the cup on a failure would be a moot point anyway.

I am not sure the best way to handle it. Either leave it on the street and don't add it to the rumor. Or when the rumor is defeated, but it back on the GOO sheet.

I don't know why the game would be over. It's not endgame: the investigators would all get replaced.

I'd go with putting the Child of Abhoth on the Rumour "any time a monster..." but then return it to the AO sheet if the Rumour is passed, because Spawn monsters can't be taken as trophies or returned to the cup. That way you're complying with all the requirements of the both general and specific rules.

My only hesitation is that Spawn monsters are typically immune from everything but direct combat. So part of me also says it should just avoid the rumor completely.

That never occurred to me. The card doesn't say that the investigators lose, though. just that they are devoured.
I was looking at it from the perspective of their all being dead and the replacement rule never crossed my mind.

Brian Yeah, my first reaction was WAAAAAT?! Then I had the same realisation: bad for the Investigators, but the game is not lost - but, man, what a set-back!!
