Subject: Is RftG without BoW ready for some of BoW goals? rss

Brink of War expansion introduces 5 new goals. I like these new goals because they diversify the game. It's nice to play with new goals because rate of reapeating similar goal configurations is lower.

The problem is we stopped playing with BoW and made a step back to base + TGS + RvI (we like BoW however game with BoW seems to be a bit to "heavy" and exhausing). Re really love RvI and our duels in RvI are most exciting and close. However that would be great to have more goals because it's sometimes quite monotone to play with only the ones provided by TGS and RvI.

Allright, let's cut to the chase. What if we'd include some of BoW goals in our RvI games? Would it spoil/broke/unbalance the game? Is non-BoW RftG ready for these goals?

Two of goals intruduced by BoW include Prestige (i.e: Galactic Standing and Galactic Prestige) so they are out of considerations. But other 3 could be potentially played also without BoW expansion:
1. Peace/War Leader (First to have either Military less than zero, with at least two worlds in tableau, or a takeover power, with at least two military worlds in tableau)
2. Military Influence (First to have either at least three IMPERIUM cards or at least four military worlds in tableau)
3. Prosperity Lead (At least three and the most cards with Consume powers in tableau)

Regarding to 1) I think it may be problematic because in RvI there are much less cards with takeover powers (only 4) and peaceful strategy is played very rare (no Universal Peace Institute). So it would be very occasional. Do you agree?

So we're left with 2) and 3). I think using them shouldn't spoil the game (although it's almost sure they have never been playtested without BoW).
Yeah, I know in pre-BoW there is still not as many (playable) Imperium cards so 2) would probably in most cases devolve to plain "First to have at least four military worlds in tableau", but is it very bad? And rewarding cards with consume powers before BoW shouldn't be too bad either .

Have enyone ever tried it? And even if not, please share your opinions.

I once asked about using the Uplift Knowledge 1st goal in a exp #1 only game, and the general consensus was (IIRC...) not enough Uplift cards with just exp #1, so getting it is more of a chore and luck dependant.

I get the feeling that Prosperity Lead was held off till exp #3 since it would've seemed too easy to manage introducing it in exp #1. Plus, it kicks things up a notch, as something like Production Leader is certainly more difficult to pull off. Having to deal with that early on kinda "trains your mind" to see goals as not just 3 or 5pts you can get, but also something that works better if you can make that associated strategy work (Prod. Leader is more difficult to get, and the design team has even admited they purposely made it 4 production worlds instead of Largets Industry's 3 brown/blue)

The 4 mili-worlds side of Military Influence 1st goal may turn out to be the same reason I stated above with Propserity Lead... people already had the concept of spamming military worlds since base game that it was probably held off to make way for more sophisticated strategies and/or better balance. The 3 IMPERIUMs OTOH.... I agree it may be due to relative scarcity of IMPERIUM cards (like with UPLIFT cards in just exp #1).... there's:
Imperium Armamanets World
Galactic Imperium
Imperium Lords
Imperium Troops
Imperium Cloaking Technology (ICT)
Imperium Warlord
Imperium Gem Blaster Consortium
Imperium Seat (IS)
8 out of 180 cards, minus 2 start worlds per player, plus 6 cards per start hand per player, which still seems proportionally lower given 8 to 10 out of as little as 138 total cards left. Then again, exp #3 only introduces 4 to 5 new Imperium cards (Imperium Fuel Depot, Imperium Capital, Imperium Planet Buster, and Imperium Invasion Fleet), so it may have been a thing of luck anyways. I certainly notice in exp #3, I often get this moreso through 4 military worlds.

War/Peace Leader... Well, if you play without TO, no need to worry about the former. However, if you did have it, then it's pretty much only ICT, IS, and Rebel Alliance, with ICT having 2 copies for slightly more odds of finding it. Exp #3 introduces Interstellar Causus Belli (x2), Rebel Sneak Attack (x2), and Imperium Planet Buster. However, Imperium Invasion Fleet being able to combine and takeover a non-military world does make pursuing a TO option more viable. Speaking of which, did not actively notice that Univ. Peace Inst. does work with Peace Leader part of things. However, I've always taken this first goal to be very "wonky". You get them as a "window of opporunity", but then try to make due with the weaknesses it saddles you with (having negative military which can be overcome with pfmw power like Contact Specialit, of which exp #3 does introduce Ravaged Uplift World and Alien Research Team), while getting a TO could still fit into your strategy (if you actually use it, or just use the non-TO portion of those cards).

OP,

The ratio of Imperium cards in RvI is close to BoW, making that goal more than just a race for 4 military worlds: 9/180 (5%) vs 14/224 (6%).

I think 3+ consume powers would actually improve balance in RvI.

Good points here. It always seemed to me, that ration of Imperium words in BoW is much higher but you are right .

If you're interested in variety, but not especially concerned with balance or luck-of-the-draw issues, you could craft some of your own goals. In 8 House Rules / Variants I Always Play with, the original poster mentions a gray-world goal and a two-random-goods world goal. I also posted some more ideas farther down that were mostly musings--and I suspect many others have posted other ideas in the forums. It'd be easy to paste an appropriate icon onto a peice of cardboard and play with it.
