We tried out a two player variant today.

We used the expansion board, and the two houses in play were Martell and Lannister. Nothing north of Lannisport/Riverrun was in play.

We removed the Valyrian Blade from play as too powerful. Holding Fiefdoms simply meant you won ties in combat.

First spot in King's Court got 2 starred orders, second spot got 1.

We played to 8 cities.

On our first playtest, things were pretty well balanced at start. After turns 1 and 2 both houses held about the same amount of mustering points of cities. We had an early wildling attack, which we lost, and the loss of 4 points of units hurt Martell a bit too much.

We were also playing with the higher powered combat cards; combined with Lannister's advantage in generating power, Tywin was able to force a win in combat handily over any odds Martell could muster.

But, the game was fun and had the feel of AGOT (minus treaties, which we generally disallow anyway because the game drags on).

Changes we'd make the next time:

1) Remove Riverrun from play.

2) Use the lower powered combat cards, to remove the Tywin effect.

3) Possibly change the effect of losing against the wildlings...4 mustering points of units is devastating when there are only two players. Both players losing 2 mustering points might work better.

I'd love to hear from anyone else that tries this out. The game went quickly with only two players, so it fit into an evening with other gaming going on.

I generally only have two players interested in aGoT, so I'd love to try out this variant, and will do so with your suggested modifications.

One question, why add the expansion map and Martell?

it is an option for a two player game... another option is to muster two houses...

I have not tried it... but it might get tricky... when you have to gain from attacking your foe...
