Factory Manager is a mystical game. I love it but I lose at it way more than I win. I get power grid now. I win at that pretty often, or come very close except for some small mistakes some times. I make use of the player order to my advantage.
Factory Manager though, I have yet to grasp. I have yet to understand when I should want first pick or best discount. I think the answer is: it depends.
Just like how in Dominion, Pirate Ship may be an awesome card in one game or completely counterable in another (often because players can remove all their money and rely on actions for money).
So, in Factory Manager it comes down to reading the situation, making some plan and a potentially a back up plan and following through with it. Reading the situation means looking at what you could use best, and what other players could use best and trying to avoid conflicting with their interests, or conversely, intentionally messing up their interests.
In any case, it's a very interesting game and there's more to it than first glances/plays might suggest.

There's more to it than what I stated of course. The situation can also be affected by energy cost fluctuations, initial starting tiles in the market and all kinds of other things.
