Does it seem like the Tigers are like the crazy guy in the old Abbott & Costello routine, "Niagara Falls"?
If a T-34 ends up on the same row as a Tiger, no matter if it's at six o'clock, no matter that it is going to inflict a critical hit, no matter that the Tiger turret has to turn 3 times, if it's within 3 hexes the T-34 is going to die. (Or even 4 hexes at flank aspect). Combat case B says unless one side is destroyed, (and Tigers can't be) return fire happens. Sure, don't allow that to situation, but with the number of slowdowns and stops, that 8.8 up on a hill and a board only 11 hexes wide and the 7 hex wide kill zone, how does the Russian get anyone off?
Disclaimer: Just new to the game, need to be schooled, but 1st time a bloodbath.

When attacked by 2 or more soviet tanks, Tiger can only counterattack once. Also, if T34 is hidden in the forest hex (with no adjacent tiger) it has an option to stay silent = no fear of retaliation.
Initial terrain hex placement is VERY important for both players. Get the setup right, and you'll see your T34 escaping.
Unless you're outguessed

Well I stand corrected. In the 2nd game the 1st Tiger was swarmed by 3 T-34s and soon reduced to 1 card. The 2nd couldn't catch up to 2 34's streaming off the board for 10VPs. The Stuka did recon but the Russkys hid in the woods or backed up to the game edge to prevent a rear shot.
You are right. Terrain placement and utilization are extremely important.
I'm con cerned now about how to best use the ATGs effectively. At best they are lucky to be VP neutral. Too easy to spot and wipe out. More lessons to be learned.

ATGs won't win the battle for you. They're merely distractions, obstacles that make soviet player advance slower and be more cautious. Just another thing for the german player to block 'safe passages' for T34s - like mines and heavy terrain.
The 88 can deliver a nasty surprise though, if you're lucky
