What are the details/limits on the "up to 5 steppe hexes in a row" movement?

Must you be able to use only forward movement to qualify for it? For example; T-34 would have to spend 1 movement to turn towards the open steppe. Does it then move up to 5 hexes? Does it then move only 4 hexes because 1 MP has been used? Must you first be lined up in perfect position to potentially use 5 hexes before you can qualify?

Does First Fire (kill the enemy before he can shoot back) apply to a tank firing form a woods hex into an adjacent hex? Being adjacent to a unit in a woods usually means they are no longer hidden. So does that also negate the First Fire rule or does "woodsiness" overrule?

If both sides end up in adjacent woods hexes does that in effect negate First fire for both? It would seem logical.
