It's a memory game. The players are supposed to see the setup at the beginning.

We don't worry about it too much. We pretty much all set it up randomly and then spin it around a few times. We build it quickly too. No one has ever really known where walls were when they started.
I would disagree that it is a memory game in that everyone is supposed to see the board and memorize it. Instead, it's a memory game where you're supposed to figure out where the walls are and then remember that for future movement.

Different strokes for different folks.
The rules don't specify that the wall layout if secret information and we've found it more enjoyable to play with each player taking turns placing the walls. The board is spun around so all most players end up with is an impression of the layout.

We always reset the board to a new configuration before we put it away so the first game no one remembers how it was set up. I have also heard of people taking turns placing pieces so as not to favor one person. If you had five people one person could be the board setter each round also.
