Hallo,
I really like this game for its simplicity and theme. Unfortunately all my Games were a bit one-sided. i also missed the Eburones and Nervii, so I made this Variant, which - till now- worked quite well.
Unit abbreviation are meant: Initiative/Steps/Battle rating (Caesar= A-4-3).
GAULS: "A" = A-2-2 = Cavalry "B" = B-3-2 = Elite Warriors (Some Armour, Nobles...) "C" = C-3-2 = Normal Warriors (Levy) "X" = X-3-2 = Fanatics (Note: "X" roll dice at Beginning of Battle: 1,2 = A, 3,4 = B, 5,6 = C for Duration of Battle. Reserves roll extra.).
1xA, 3xX GERMANIA 1xA, 2xC: ARVERNI, BELLOVACI 1xA, 1xB: AEDUI 1xB, 1xC: BOII, CADURCI, SENONES, SEQUANI 2xC ALLOBROGES, ANDES, BITURIGES, BRITANNIA, SANTONES, 1xC, 1xX HELVETII 2xX EBURONES, NERVII 1xB CARNUTES, TARBELLI 1xC ATREBATES, ESUVII, LEUCI, LINGONES, MENAPI, PICTONES, REMI, SEGUSIAVI, TOLOSATES, VENETI, VOLCAE, Leaders: ARIOVIST X-3-3, Dumnorix/Ambiorix B-3-2, Vercingetorix B-4-2
Note 1:MANDUBII - irrelevant tribe, just happened to have a good fortress. Former Mandubii Territory Western Part: SENONES 1xB,1xC, no fortress, Eastern Part: LINGONES 1xC with Fortress ALESIA Note 2: NERVII - Northern Part of Remi Territory. Note 3: EBURONES - South-Eastern Part of former Menapi territory, Fortress ADUATUCA. Note 4: HELVETII & BOII / SEGUSIAVI. SEGUSIAVI (an Aduan Vassal) start at former BOII territory 1xC. BOII 1xB start with HELVETII. After the combined HELVETIANS & BOII are eliminated once, the HELVETII return to their home, the BOII settle with Segusiavi and count as one tribe from then.
ROMANS: In my opinion the Romans were too strong, so I changed their Initiative for most units to "B". To compensate I use the Roman historical Strength optional rule (Battle Rating = 3 for all Legions with Caesar). I also added Auxiliaries for historical flavour.
1x A-4-3! CAESAR 1x A-4-3 LABIENUS (=VII) 8x B-4-2 LEGIONS 4x A-3-1 AUXILIARIES (Balear.Slingers,Cretan Archers, Numidian Javeliners, Iberian cav)
Note 1: New Recruited legions start with only 3 steps! Note 2: GALLIA CISALPINA, I renamed the former Roman Offboard Area. CISALPINA borders HELVETII and ALLOBROGES (non-open Border, "Pass"), and TRANSALPINA (open border). TRANSALPINA borders no longer HELVETII.
I played alone and with friends 5 games and it worked very well.
