Just got The Climbers and having great fun with it but wanted to check how to use the ladder pieces.
As I understand the ladder mechanic, once you use one of your ladders it is immediately removed from the game, in which case there's no real need to actually place it on the building. I could just say "I'm using this ladder to climb to here" and then chuck it back in the box. But looking at some of the photos there are pics with the ladders propped up on the building, is this just for aesthetic purposes or am I missing something?
Thinking of ways the ladder pieces could be utilised, as a variant, they could have a similar effect as the blocking stones in that they hang around for one whole turn and block the two connected blocks from being moved/rotated...and/or if another players pawn can reach the ladder they can climb it too (providing the spaces at the top and bottom are legal for that colour of course).
I haven't tried these variants, they only just came to me as I was typing this so could well be a load of rubbish!

I had only played once but our understanding was the ladder was left there for others to use.

I'm pretty sure they're removed. My rules say "A ladder once used is immediately removed from play."
But a variant that they stay might be fun to try.

If you have the English edition, there is an alternate rule called "simultaneous movement," which allows more than one player to use a ladder, but it is still removed from the game at the end of the placing player's turn.
Some people place the ladder for a closer simulation, or to measure the distance to make sure it's legal. Photos may just show ladders remaining for effect, not as a part of game play.
The tricky part of the variant you propose is all the minor rules you'd have to make in addition (e.g., what about blocking the upper surface with a block so the ladder is no longer tall enough?) and the difficulty in remembering whose ladder was whose and when they get removed.
