I have two daughters, ages 6 and 9, and was wondering if this would be a good game for the family.

The girls play a wide variey of games including pandemic, forbidden island, thebes, small world, killer bunnies, and fresco.

In the reviews I didn't see any mention of how it plays with kids. I am looking for a quick small card game to play when we travel.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The suggested age on the box is 10+.
That said, if they already play a lot of games, Fairy Tale doesn't have a lot of rules and each of the cards has its score listed.
The game is also on the cheap side, so I'd give it a try with them.

Considering the other games they play it wouldn't be a problem. The artwork is a bit dark but I assume you don't mind that. There is nothing Walt Disney about the game.

personally, I think the theme is a bit too distant and dry for a 6 or 9 year old.

I've had adults complain about the math in this game, but I think some people can ignore the specifics about the numbers and play with a general understanding of "these cards are worth more points if you have these other cards"

My 7yo son enjoys this game (he likes the "collecting" aspect) and wins too, so I'd say no problem...

Someone posted a nice "basic" variant at the Fairy Tale main page, which has worked well with my kids (two boys, ages 9 and 7). In short, you remove all the attacking cards (black), as well as all of the more complicated cards (the ones with the stars at the top).

In this way, you can introduce the basic mechanics - card drafting, and building one's tableau. After several plays, you can begin to introduce the more complicated cards, at a pace they are comfortable with.

I have 8 year old twin daughters who like this a lot. We tend to play without the advanced cards though.

Don't forget that BGG has a poll where users can vote on what they suggest the appropriate age to play is. 12 people have voted, and still the 10+ suggested age, although that might be assuming all the cards are used.

Any folks who have experience playing this (or trying to) with children might want to vote, to make it more accurate.

Mine 9 year old daughter consistently beats me at it. It's one of her favorite games. Once you know it the game can be played in about 5 minutes, so it's not super deep, but it's a blast nonetheless.

The scoring is odd, but after a game or two it clicks.

I'd say give it a shot.

My six year old son is really in to Fairy Tale. He doesn't get all the math at the end, but the build up, and what cards work together he totally understands. This is a great game for kids, even if they don't understand 100% of it.
