Hi,
The rules say:
"Note! There may be any number of groups in the Castrum, but never two groups with the same pips and the same number of dice. Each player may have more than one group there as long as he follows these rules and never has two groups with the same pips."
For the last part I understand that the same player cannot have a 4-4-4 and a 4 group
Am I right? Just want to clear that up...

That's correct, as far as I understand the rules, anyway. You'd have one group of 4-4-4-4, in your example.

Am I right? Just want to clear that up... I've always interpreted that as the same player (or any other player, for that matter) cannot have a 4-4-4 and a 4-4-4. There can be a 4, a 4-4, a 4-4-4, a 4-4-4-4 (and so on) as long as any other group does not match.

The same player can not have more than one group of 4s. The German rules include an example to that effect.

I think Jens is correct (I read the bolded rule the same).
Both the english and the german rules have the same example, Darius places 3 fours, Antonius places 2 fours, then Darius rolls 2 more fours and 2 fives. His only options presented are to add 1 or 2 fours to his existing group, or to place fives. It specifically mentions that he can't make a new group of 2 fours, because that would be the same as Antonius's group.
It's the absence of "Antonius could start a new group with 1 four" that confirms Jens' thoughts. If one player could have multiple groups of fours, they'd have mentioned it there.
